Israel Will Air
Disputed Film

JERUSALEM (JTA)
The controversial film Hir-
bet Hiza was scheduled to be
shown on Israel television
Monday, just a week after
Education Minister Zevu-
lun Hammer banned it on
grounds that it served Arab
propaganda interests. The
Israel Broadcasting Au-
thority voted 18-6 to over-
ride Hammer despite pro-
tests from Herut and the
National Religious Party.

,Hirbet Hiza is based on a
popular novelette by
Samech Izhar (Smilansky)
which depicts the dilemma
of Israeli soldiers who
banished Arabs from their
village during Israel's war
for independence in. 1948.
Although fictional, _ it is
based on actual incidents.

It was about to be broad-
cast last Monday night
when Hammer exercised
his authority to have it can-
celled pending a review by
the full Broadcasting Au-
thority. His action brought
charges of censorship.

TEL AVIV — Sami Es-
mail, an American Palesti-
nian who is a student at
Michigan State University,
denied at a court hearing
Tuesday that he received
weapons training from the
terrorist Popular Front for
the Liberation of Palestine.
Israeli authorities have
charged Esmail with
"membership in an unlaw-
ful association" and "main-
taining contact with a
foreign agent."
Felicia Langer, who has
represented terrorists in the
past and has charged Israel
with mistreatment of pris-
oners, is Esmail's attorney.
She said she would contest a
confession he signed.
No court date had been
set in the case. ,

They will be joined in
the discussions by Wilbur
Elston, editorial page

editor for the Detroit

Board of the Anti-
Defamation League of
Bnai Brith.
The program will be mod-
erated by Dr. Joseph
Fauman of Eastern Michi-
gan University. The meet-
ing is free and open to the
public.
Public TV station Chan-
nel 56, embroiled in a con-
troversy over the airing of
statements by Nazi
spokesmen on a news prog-
ram last month, asked the
AJCommittee for permis-
sion to tape the panel dis-
cussion for later broadcast.
The AJCommittee voted
to reject the request.
