THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

By DAVID SCHWARTZ

Menahem Begin, tele-
phoning to Egypt. was
quoted in the press as
saying that he looked for-
ward to visiting Egypt —
anxious especially to see the
pyramids. After all, Jews
were also employed build-
ing them. He promised not
to ask for any in-
demnification for the Jew-
ish labor.

Begin, often pictured as a
violent Zionist, reveals him-
self quite the contrary and
seems to have a very lively
funny bone.
The fact is that even in
those days of the past, when
Begin was in arms against
the British who were back-
sliding from the promises
given in the Balfour Decla-
ration, Begin's humor was
evident. The British offered
a reward of many thousands
of Pounds Sterling for his
capture. Begin hid himself
behind a pair of whiskers.
What could be funnier? The
British, seeing the beard,
mistook him for a rabbi. It
is said the British once
came to his doorstep and
rapped on the door. Begin
came out "Rabbi, is Begin
here?" he was asked.

"Begin - Begin. - said Be-
gin, "How do you spell it?"
If Israel were to ask for-
indemnification for past
bills due to our forefathers
in Egypt. the bill would
have to include much more
than the work of helping
build the pyramids. After
all, the Israelites were in
Egypt .400 years and they
must have done a lot of
other things. They should be
entitled to a special in-
demnification for the bricks
they had to make without
straw.
It will be recalled that
according to the Book of
Exodus _when Moses came
to free them, the Pharoah
just for spite, demanded
that they produce as many
bricks without giving them
the materials. Jews are en-
titled to damages for this.
And what about severance
pay when they left Egypt?
There is no record they re-
ceived any at all.
Speaking of the Begin
sense • of humor, one would
wish that the United Nations
might have a little bit of it.
Despite the Sadat-Begin ne-
gotiations. the United Na-
tions seems to be going on
doing its usual thing — pass-
ing more resolutions con-
demning Israel. The New
York Times the other day
told of one speaker -droning
on- condemning Israel to a
half-filled Assembly. Even
thoSe who were there, wrote
the Times correspondent,
were paying no attention,
reading magazine articles,
writing letters. doing every-
thing but listening to the
speaker.
They should place a tele-
vision set in the hall of the
United Nations so the dele-
gates could amuse them-
selves, maybe by watching
a football game while the
speakers berate Israel. The
poor delegate should have
some relief.
If the United Nations had
any sense of humor or any
sense at all, it would realize
that it is cooking its own
goose. Its one-sidedness and
bias are contributing to its
own downfall. The problems
which it should settle are
being adjusted, outside of it.
One delegate to the UN who
seems to have a sense of
humor is the Israeli envoy,
Chaim Herzog. He is a Jew
and Irishman — his father
was Ireland's Chief Rabbi
— and the Irish and Jews
both have troubles with
their homelands and both
have strong senses of hu-
mor.
Humor can be powerful.
Remember the scene on
television — Golda Meir is
sitting beside Sadat and she
takes out a bracelet. "You
called me an old lady, Mr.
President. As an old grand-
mother, I wish to give a
grandfather a present for
your grandchild."
The face of Sadat lit up
with a broad smile — and
all around smiled. In Egypt,
thousands watching smiled.
When people smile together,
there is peace.
The great Hasidic Rabbi
Bunam once saw a man who
appeared to be drowning.
"Give my regards to the
Leviathan. - he called out.

(The Leviathan is the fish
which the righteous eat in
the hereafter.) The man in
the river was amused and
became more composed and
saved himself.
Perhaps a world sinking
in war may be rescued by
the same method.
