with those who are lured by
the "Jews for Jesus" and
similar movements.
Strict adherence to Jew-
ish traditional laws and
practices is demanded by
Rabbi Kahane.
"Why Be Jewish?" has a
summation that defines his
attitudes and advocacies.
He declares:
"If you want an answer,
do not seek an easy one. If
you want to be a Jew—be
the one that always existed.
Seize the mainstream of
Judaism, no matter how dif-
ficult it may be. Let me
suggest to you a few points
of departure:
• That life is short and
meaningless if its purpose
becomes the mere pursuit
of pleasure. That unless we
are to go mad, there must
be something more to this
brief candle.
• The knowledge that
Jew is different and exclu-
sive; that he has a role to
play which will determine
his and the world's destiny;
that the Torah turns him,
his people, and in the end
all humanity into a holy
and meaningful entity.
• That Torah cannot en-
dure with simple practice,
but is based upon deep and
never-ending study, and
that without scholarship,
Judaism degenerates into
the joke of the Long Island
temple.

Rabbi Meir Kahane is the
ultra-militant Jew. He
brooks no concessions to
any and all aaherences to
Jewish traditions. He is as
firm in his stand in his
writings as he is in action
and in demonstrations he
organizes against Nazism
and every manifestation of
anti-Semitism and presently
in his demands for total
Jewish hegemony in Israel.
These views of his are
expressed in -his new book,
"Why Be Jewish?" (Stein
and Day).
As the organizer of the
Jewish Defense League,
Rabbi Kahane adheres to
the views advocated in this
volume. He deals with inter-
marriage, with the prob-
lems affecting the youth,

their wives, Jews respected
them. While others rolled in

JERUSALEM
(JTA)—Hamdi Kadi, an
Arab Palestinian official
with close ties with Israel's
military authorities in the
West Bank, was shot to
death Tuesday on his way
to work. The Palestine
Liberation Organization has
claimed responsibility for
the murder.
The 40-year-old Kadi, who
was a military government
official in charge of
education in the West Bank
city of Ramallah, was shot
from a passing car while
immediately sped away.
The killing came in the
wake of the trip to Egypt
by leading Palestinians,
who endorsed the
Begin-Sadat peace making
efforts.
Political observers
commented that the
murder took place probably
as a warning to moderate
Palestinians to withdraw
any support for a
negotiated settlement with
Israel.
