Borden's Exec Hails Israel for Its Economic Development

;I

)

NEW YORK (JTA) — A
leading U.S. industrialist
hailed Israel's economic
achievements as a
foundation for peace, in the
entire Middle East. A.R.
Marusi, board chairman
and chief executive officer
of Borden, Inc., made this
statement at a dinner of
1.5 0 0 leaders' in the
chemical and food
industries in honor of
Milton Perlmutter, national
chairman of the Commerce
and Industry Division of
Israel Bonds. Perlmutter is
president of Supermarkets
i'leral Corp.
arusi, who visited
Israel early in the year,
said that "year after year

the building of a strong
modern industrial state
represented the most
helpful resource of the
Middle East. -
Citing Israel's industrial
potential, he pointed out
that Borden had imported
much of its potash
requirements from Israel
during the past 10 years.
"I believe," he said,
"that in the technical and
scientific skills, the
determination and
compassion of modern
Israel there is true hope for
the Middle East."
He emphasized that
"Israel, the land of so
much of our common
history; is also the land of

Carter: Peace Talks Possible
Without Syrian Participation

WASHINGTON
(JTA)—President Carter
expressed hope Monday
that Syria will join the
peace negotiations now
under way between Israel
and Egypt and said that he
would like to meet with
Syrian President Hafez
Assad on this matter.

Addressing an impromptu
press conference in front of
his mother-in-law's home in
Plains, Ga., the President
noted, however, that the
current Egyptian-Israeli
talks could continue and
agreement could be
reached on several key
issues without the
participation of the Syrians.
Carter's reference to
Syria brought closer the
possibility that the
President will meet with
the Syrian leader during
his trip to six countries
starting this week.
The President already
disclosed that while in Iran,

the second stop on his trip,
he will confer with King
Hussein of Jordan.
"The only territorial
matter involving the
Syrians is the Golan
Heights area," the
President said. "But there
is no reason for them to be
directly involved in the
negotiations.
"There could be a
complete settlement of the
Gaza Strip, West Bank
(and) Palestinian Arab
question without the
Syrians' participation."
Meanwhile, Pope Paul
VI, in his Christmas Day
message, expressed the
hope that the talks between
Premier Menahem Begin of
Israel and President Anwar
Sadat of Egypt in Ismailia
would bring peace to the
Holy Land and the entire
Mideast.
The Pope has repeatedly
expressed his satisfaction
with _the recent turn of
events in the Mideast.

our common hope for peace
today. It could not be so
without the support of a
vigorous and healthy
industrial economy."
Israeli Premier Menahem
Begin, in a message to the
dinner, praised Perlmutter
for his leadership in the
Israel Bond program and
commended him for
encouraging industry
leaders to trade with
Israel.

Israeli Personnel Leave Cairo
As Peace Talks Are Adjourned

JERUSALEM
(JTA)—With the Cairo
conference adjourned until
early next year, the Isreali
"colony" of diplomats and
journalists who have been
in the Egyptian capital for
the past three weeks is
returning.
Dr. Elihau Ben-Elissar,
head of the Israeli
negotiating team in Cairo,
told reporters at
Ben-Gurion Airport that
reports of disappointment
- _in Egypt over the outcome
s the Ismailia talks were
`- grossly exaggerated.
He also said he could not
understand why there was
disappoinment in Israel.
"This is the beginning of a
long process and there are
ups and downs in every
such process," he said.
Ben-Elissar said the work
of the Cairo conference was
of important material value
and many personal
connections were made. It
was an important start, he
said, and he was confident
that peace ultimately will
be achieved.
Israeli Defense Minister

chairmen, announced that
$5.3 million in Israel Bonds
had been sold as a result of
the dinner. Michael Arnon,
president of the Israel
Bond , Organization,
presented the Israel Prime
Minister's Medal to
,Perlmutter.

Dear Julius:

Ezer Weizman, who
accompanied Begin to
Ismailia, spoke in a similar
vein to the Likud Knesset
faction Tuesday. He said he
was confident that 1978 will
be the year of peace.
Pending resumption of
negotiations on the
ministerial - level, only a
skeleton staff of Israelis
remained in Cairo along
with a few Israel
Broadcasting Sei- vice
people who will do a series
of programs on Egypt. An
El Al Boeing 707 from
Cairo landed at Ben-Gurion
Airport Monday night with
scores of Israeli journalists.
