A Famous Classic Is Revived:
`Memoirs of Glueckel of Hameln'
Reissued as Schocken Paperback

Among the most remark-
able documents describing
Jewish life in Germany 300
years ago are the memoirs
of a woman. It retains its
classic position in Jewish
literature and is one of the
very unique stories depict-
ing Jewish life that has
made her story a book
?passed on from generation
to generation with the cer-
tainty of its retention never
to be forgotten..
"The Memoirs of Glue-
ckel of Hameln" is the de-
tailed account of a widow's
legacies as and Jew-
ess written both as history,
as credo, as explanation of
the life to be lived as Jews.
The Schoken paperback is
translated by Marvin Low-
enthal, with an introduction
by Robert Rosen.
Glueckel set about writing
her memoirs in 1690 to help
pass the sleepless nights af-
ter the death of her hus-
band. She wrote them for
her 14 children, taking great
pains with the details of
their genealogy, "so you
may know from what sort of
people you have sprung, lest
today or tomorrow your be-
loved children or grand-
children come and know
naught of their family."
Gluckel was 44 when her
husband died—they had
been marled for 30 years.
Glueckel's story- is fasci-
nating on many levels. It
tells of the intimate con-

cerns of a woman and her
family, both personal and
universal.
Glueckel's memoirs tell of
war, plague, pirates, sol-
diers, the hysteria of the
false messiah Sabbtai Zevi,
murder, bankruptcy, wed-
ding feasts, births, deaths,
in fact, of all the huthan
events that befell her during
her lifetime.
She writes in a matter-of-
fact way of the frightening

and precarious situation un-
der which the Jews of north-
ern Germany lived. Accept-
ing this situation as given,
she boldly and fearlessly
promotes her business, her
family and her faith.
Glueckel tells her story
with insight and humor, and
although we are removed
from her experiences by
three centuries, she makes
us feel very much a part of
her life and her times.

Cairo Radio Plays Israel Peace

.

Song, Composer Comments

NEW YORK, (JTA)—Ac-
cording to a letter from an
Israeli to a friend in New
York, after Eza'at Elka-
hira, the governmental
Cairo Boradcasting Service,
transmitted Egyptian Presi-
dent Anwar Sadat's speech
direct from the Egyptian
Parliament where he an-
nounced his proposal for the
Cairo conference, the an-
nouncer said: "Dear listen-
ers, we will now play you a
beautiful song _ of peace
which a mother sings to her
child." He identified the
song as "Ufi Ruakh,'
(Blow, Gentle Breeze).
It was an Israeli song
composed by Issachar Mi-
ron to the poem by Aharon
Ashman, the distinguished
doyen of the Israeli authors.
Miron, who resides in
New York, was former mu-
sic deputy director in Is-
rael's Ministry of Education
and Culture and was officer-
in-chief of the arts and hu-
manities of Israel's army
during the War of Independ-
ence.
He is also the author of
the internationally popular
Israeli song, "Tzena, Tzena,
Tzena."

From 1880 through the
first World War, the ORT
"fund" served Eastern Eu-
ropean Jewry by dispensing
financial aid to needy farm-
ers; to students who attend-
ed trade schools; to artisans
in order to purchase simple
tools; and to those whose
craft or skill could be more
productive by moving to the
large city. During the war
with its chaotic uprooting of -
thousands of Jews, ORT
sponsored a program of "re-
lief through work," for
25,000 persons.

Miron recalls that during
the 1950s the Egyptian radio
station played Tzena,
Tzena, Tzena quite fre-
quently till it discovered
that the song was written by
giew. Then it was abruptly
taken off the air.

It now seems, Miron ob-
served, "that we may now
be listening to the footsteps
of the messenger of good
tidings, that harbinger
peace' as foretold by the
Prophet Isaiah."
