New Sephardic Program Opens at Hebrew University
JERUSALEM—The aca-
demic year 1977-78 will
mark two new devel-
opments at the Hebrew Uni-
versity of Jerusalem's pro-
ram of studies in

Sephardic and Oriental Jew-
ish culture.
Within the framework of
the Misgav Yerushalayim
Institute for Study and Re-
search on the Sephardic and
Oriental Jewish Heritage (a
joint project of the Hebrew
University, the Council of
the Sephardic Community
of Jerusalem and the World
Sephardi Federation), a
long-range post-graduate
program has begun, leading
to doctoral degrees in Seph-
ardi and Oriental culture.
The second project is an
international conference,
sponsored by Misgav Ye-
nishalayim,. in June, 1978,
for the leading experts in
the field of Sephardic and
Oriental Jewish studies.
Goals of the conference
will include summarizing
the state of research at pre-
sent, creating a permanent.
forum of scholarly contact,
and drawing up a working
paper that will serve in
guiding the institute's future
work.

federal distric't court in
Memphis has upheld the po-
sition of the Tennessee em-
ployment security depart-
ment which refused to allow
an Orthodox Jewish woman
resident of Memphis to take
a civil service examirration
on a day other than the
Jewish Sabbath.
Mrs. Glenda Kantor is ap-
pealing the lower court rul-
ing to the federal Court of
Appeals for the Fourth Cir-
cuit in Cincinnati.
A joint friend of the court
brief has been filed in sup-
port of the appeal by the
National Jewish Commis-
sion on Law and Public Af-
fairs (COLPA) and the Anti-
Defamation League of Bnai
Brith.
Mrs. Kantor's attorney
chose not to file under the
1972 amendment to the 1964
Civil Rights Act which pro-
vides that an employer
must seek to "reasonably
acconunodate" the religious

Zedek. The Limitless Space

Hillel House. Rabbi Yitzhak
Lipszyc will speak on "The
History and Current Status
of the Ch _ abad Movement."
Hillel House hours are 7-
11 p.m. daily, dosed Friday.
