last June, Leo celebrated
his Bar Mitzva in Novo-
sibirsk, which is just 500
miles north of Mongolia, si-
multaneously with the Bar
Mitzva of an Israeli boy at.
the Western Wall in Jerusa-
lem.
Almost six years ago
Leo's father, Alexander, ap-
plied for permission for his
family to leave for Israel,
mission was denied them on
the grounds that Alexander
had had access to secrets.
In truth he had worked as a
mechanical engineer in a
toy factory! For five years
Alexander has been out of
work because of his appli-
cation.
Last year permission to
emigrate was granted only
to Leo's 80-year old grand-
mother who had lived with,
them. The family was heart-
broken to separate from
her, but did so in the hope
that permission to reunite
the family in Israel would
be given. It was not.
Leo's parents are in poor
health. His mother, Raya,
has suffered a series of
heart attacks, the most re-
cent this past summer, and
their circumstances, they
are not getting the health
care they need.
In 18 months Paul will
have to enter the Soviet
army, which would mean an
end for many years to their
hopes to emigrate.
To help Leo and his fam-
ily, letters may be sent to
them and to the Soviets.

Israel Oil Find in Suez Brings
Hope It May Be Fuel Source
TEL AVIV (JTA)—A re-
cent off-shore oil strike in
Israel-controlled waters of
the Gulf of Suez has 'raised
hopes that Israel may be on
the threshhold of a major
new oil find there and in
other areas.
Israel Lior, director of the
National Oil Co., told Bar-
Ilan University students
that new drillings will begin
shortly at A-Tur, site of the
original . well off the south
Sinai coast and in the Medi-
terranean off El Arish in
northern Sinai.
The Neptune Oil Explor-
ation Co., which operates
the drills at A-Tur, report-
edly hired a team of Ameri-
can experts to study its
plans for developing the
new oil field. The plans
have been submitted to
Energy Minister Yitzhak
Modai and are expected to
be approved pending the
Americans' report.
The A-Tur strike was
made by a renovated oil rig
that Israel had purchased
