Sickle Cell Anemia
Treatment Sought
at Weizmann U.

REHOVOT, Israel—A
new approach to treating
sickle cell anemia—a hered-
itary disease which is par-
ticularly prevalent among
blacks and which kills some
100,000 persons each year—
is now under study at the
Weizmann Institute of
Science.
The drugs being synthe-
sized in the Weizmann labo-
ratories are easy to pro-
duce, since they are simple
peptides or small protein
fragments which act by
sticking to the surface of the
defective hemoglobin mole-
cules found in the blood of
sickle cell patients, thus
preventing the abnormal
aggregation of the hemoglo-
bin and the resulting dan-
gerous deformation of the
red blood cell in which it is
stored.

Remember the virtues
you lack ,and the faults you
have; forget the good you
did and the faults you re-
ceived.
