Israel is a country ruled
by Jews who hate Arabs,
who confiscate Arab land in
an attempt to -Judaize - the
country, and purposely
withhold government serv-
ices from Arabs as evidence
of their contempt, is the
message Riah Abu El-Assal,
rector of Christ Church in
Nazareth, propagated while
he was in the Detroit area
last week.
A Nazareth City coun-
cilman and an admitted
"socio-economic" activist,
El-Assal stopped in South-
field during a two-week tour
of the United States. He
came seeking funds for the
establishment of an Arab
high school and junior col-
lege in Nazareth, while
spreading the word on what
he called "human rights

violations" in Israel.
According to El-Assal, the
Israelis confiscated nearly
2,000 of the original 4,000
acres that once made up
Nazareth, to build Upper
Nazareth, a Jewish town
where El-Assal said there
are more than 100 factories
— including a Dodge assem-
bly plant — wide paved
streets, two swimming pools
and adequate schools.
Nazareth proper, El-Assal
said, lacks schools, ade-
quate sewer and water sys-
tems, has no library, no
ambulances, and needs road
improvements. The fault for
that lies with the central
Israeli government, and not
the Nazareth city govern-
ment, according to El-
Assal.
He also contended that
Israel has set up military
camps on the land of Arab
farmers, using a law which
says land may be con-
fiscated if it is not culti-

vated for three years. El-
Assal said that after three
years the military pulls out,
the government takes over,
and no Arab may buy or
lease the property.
El-Assal said he acknowl-
edges the right of Jews to
their biblical homeland, but
he said the Palestinian
Arabs also have rights to
the land. For that reason,
he said he condones taking
up arms to regain land
taken by Israel in 1967.
"That is their right," he
said. "They are freedom
fighters."
El-Assal said there can be
no peace in the Middle East
until Israel withdraws from
"Palestinian land." There is
an Arab adage, he said,
which carries a message for
the Israelis. "A hidden
stone is sure to break the
plow."
"If we are to plow for
peace," El-Assal said, "we
must first uncover the
