Catholics Warn
Carter of PLO

• WASHINGTON — I.L.
Kenen relates in Near East
Report that a group of Cath-
olic theologians have
advised President Carter
that an invitation to the
PLO to the Geneva confer-
ence is to "reward mur-
der,"' and have asked the
President to realize that "a
state ruled by the PLO will
not biing peace."
The letter was signed by
Msgr. John M. Oesterrei-
cher and Sister Rose A.
Thering of the Institute of
Judeo-Christian Studies,
Seton Hall University, and
by Fathers Edward Flan-
nery and John Morley.
"The U.S.-Russian decla-
ration. . . confirms our fear
that the Administration has
been swayed by Arab rhe-
toric and threats," they
wrote. Pointing out that a
separate PLO state will
seek to expand, "thereby
endangering Israel as well
as Jordan," the theologians
said the whole Middle East
would be endangered as a
Moscow-backed PLO would
carry revolution to other
Arab lands.
"We are addressing this
letter . . . with fear and
trembling about the future.
And we must disclaim
responsibliity before God
and the world for the evil
that will befall it should we
rush into an ill-conceived
peace."
