`L'Shana Haba b'Temple Israe

With "L'Shana Haba
b'Temple Israel ... Amen
Sela" as the musical theme
and with Rabbi Leon Fram
turning the first shovel full
of earth the groundbreaking
for the new Temple Israel
sanctuary, at Drake and
Walnut Lake Rds., was
marked by impressive
festivities.
Dr. Fram used the same
shovel with which he turned
the first sod at the ground-
breaking for the present
Temple Israel on
Manderson.
Under the direction of
Cantor Harold Orbach, the
Temple Choir sang the spe-
cially arranged -L'Shana
Haba ... as a call to
action to the temple mem-
bership to strive for the
speedy attainment of the
goal for the construction of

the new building.
Nearly 1,000 Temple
Israel members attended
the ground-breaking cere-
monies for its new building
in West Bloomfield.
Rabbi M. Robert Syme
greeted the large gathering.
Leslie R. Schmier, temple
president, called on each
member of the congregation
to do his utmost in the suc-
cessful completion of the
project.
With nearly half of its
goal already attained in
cash and pledges, Temple
Israel plans to prepare the
land prior to the onset of
winter so that construction
can actually begin in late
spring or early summer of
1978.
Completion of the building
is scheduled for late sum-
mer of 1979.
Bernard E. Linden, chair-
man of the ground-breaking
ceremonies, cited the his-
tory of the congregation,
established in 1941 as the
second Reform congrega-
tion in Detroit.
He called attention to the
days when the temple met
in the Detroit Institute of
Arts and how for the past 27
years the congregation has
been meeting on Manderson
Rd. in the Palmer Park sec:-
tion of Detroit.
