Sharon, who resigned his
Knesset seat in 1974 in order
to retain his senior com-
mand post in the army
reserves, must now give up
his military command as
well. State Attorney Aharon
Barak has ruled that a cabi-
net minister cannot simulta-
neously serve as an army
officer, since the Israeli
Army is subordinate to the
civilian government.

1 32-ounce bottle herring tidbits
one cup canned tomato sauce
1 tbsp. oil
1 cup diced apple
1 cup diced dill pickle
1 tsp. prepared mustard
1/4 tsp. pepper
2 tbsps. sugar or to taste
Remove herring from jar and
cut into one-inch thick pieces.
Cut up onions from jar into sm
all pieces. Mix all other ing-
redients together and pour onto
herring and onions. Put into a
large covered jar and store in
the refrigerator for a couple of
days before serving.

A good side dish for a
dairy holiday meal during
Sukkot is this eggplant and
cheese recipe. It can be
served with gefilte fish,
broiled whitefish or tuna
salad.
2 medium eggplants
whole
fresh
lb.
1/2
mushrooms
2 tbsps. oil
1 15-oz. can pizza sauce
4 oz. grated mozzarella
cheese
Peel and slice eggplant.
Soak slices in three cups sal-
ted water in large bowl for 30
minutes. Drain well and dry
slices with paper towels.
Brown eggplant and mush-
rooms in hot oil on all sides,
in a large skillet. Add pizza
sauce and cook covered over
low heat for 15 minutes. Add
grated cheese and cover
again. Cook on simmer for
five minutes to melt cheese.

to an end, at least for the
time being, one of the most
brilliant and controversial
military careers in Israel.
Sharon was the hero of
the Yom Kippur War before
he entered politics. He
devised and carried out
Israel's spectacular cross-
ing of the Suez Canal in
1973, which led to the occu-
pation of a large salient of
Egypt on the African conti-
nent, and the encirclement
of an Egyptian army. But
his public criticism of the
conduct of the war by
Israel's high command
made him a controversial
figure and probably
destroyed his chances of
becoming army chief of
staff.
Sharon was one of the
founders of Likud and was
elected to the Knesset on its
ticket but subsequently
resigned to take a senior
post in the reserves.
