Torkanowsky, who for the
past 14 years served as
music director and con-

Philharmonic-Symphony
Orchestra, made his debut
as an orchestral conductor
with the Minneapolis Sym
phony (now Minnesota
Orchestra) in 1960. Since
that time, he has conducted
nearly every major orches-
tra in the United States.
Torkanowsky was born in
Germany in 1926 and emi-
grated with his parents to
Israel when he was six
years old.
He received his earliest
training from his mother,

orchestra in Tel Aviv. In
1948, Torkanowsky arrived
in New York to study violin
with Raphael Bronstein;
and from 1954 to 1959, he
studied conducting at
L'Ecole Monteux.
In 1961, as winner of the
coveted Naumberg Award,
Torkanowsky made his first
guest conducting appear-
ance with the New York
Philharmonic. He has sub-
sequently made appear-
ances with the orchestras of
cities such as Philadelphia,
Boston, Detroit, Cincinnati,
St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Balti-
more, San Francisco and
Los -Angeles.
He has also conducted
performances at festivals
such as Ravinia, Aspen and
the Festival of Two Worlds
in Spoleto, Italy.
Torkanovisity has con-
- ducted- major orchestras in
France, Spain, Italy, South
America and Israel. In sum-
mer 1974, he took the Israel
Philharmonic on tour -in
South Africa. In 1975, he
appeared with the Royal
Philharmonic Orchestra in
both England and Spain.
Recently, he appeared with
the London Symphony at the
Casals Festival in Mexico.
