Wisdom of Rabbi Abraham Kook, Ex-Israel Chief Rabbi
Rabbi Abraham Isaac
Kook was the _first Ashke-
nazi chief rabbi of Eretz
Yisrael, elected to that post
in 1921. He was born in Lat-
via in 1865 and first immi-
grated to Eretz Yisrael in
1904, where he served as
rabbi of Jaffa.
Kook formulated his own
theory of Zionism in Jewish
history. He held that the
modern return to the land of
Israel marked the beginning _

of divine redemption. He
believed, however, that the
Zionist movement was lack-
ing in spiritual aspects of
national revival and
strongly advocated the
infusion of traditional
Judaism into Zionism.
Moreover, he stated that
only in the land of Israel
could the Jewish people
work out its full religious
life. -
Kook was a mystic who
believed that 20th Century
man had made progress in
all areas but religion. But
while criticizing social ideo-
logies that limited their
interests to material condi-
tions, Kook at the same
time criticized religious
people who were not inter-
ested in social questions.
Kook, in 1924, set up a
yeshiva in Jerusalem which
was unique among yeshivot
in its religious philosophy
and its positive attitude to
Zionism. The yeshiva
became known as Merkaz
ha-Ray, and is today world
famous among religious
scholars. Kook died in 1935.
Rabbi Kook was a prolific
writer, and Jewish Affairs
magazine of South Africa
recently published a selec-
tion of some of his writings,
some of which follow:
"The Torah and all its
commandments in their
minutest details, as
expressed in thought and
deed, form a great and
mighty Divine poem. a
poem of confident trust and
love. Every commandment
and law has a unique musi-
cal quality that the Congre-
gation of Israel perceives
and appreciates. It evokes
the blossom of reverent joy
and song within us. It is for
us to remove the warts from
the ears of our sons. the
thorns and thistles that sur-
round the noble flower', so
that the waves of song will
echo in their hearts as well,
uplifting their souls with the
same natural exaltation that
is common to all in whom
the spirit of Judaism is
properly developed.
Contemporary civilization
throughout the world is
founded entirely on unbelief
and hate. forces which nul-
lify the essence of life. It is
impossible to overcome this
disease of modern society
unless we discover the good
that is contained in faith
and love. The Torah and the
divine precepts are the
channels through which
faith and love flow
unceasingly.
Faith is the song of life.
