OH. JAY B. STERN, Superintendent
YOSEI: LEVANON. Principal
Mr. and Mrs. Jules Doneson
and family
ter early this month, The
Council of Orthodox Rabbis
of Greater Detroit (Vaad
Harabonim ) issued the fol-
lowing statement on the
stabilization of neighbor-
hoods:
"The Oak Park-Southfield
area is the center of Jewish
life in the Metropolitan De-
troit area. Based here are
the schools, synagogues and
mikva that are the basic ne-
cessities of Jewish life.
Much blood, sweat and
tears have gone into build-
ing these institutions and
the Jewish neighborhood.
Many sacrifices were
brought to create and main-
tain them.
"In addition, we have cre-
ated a harmonious relation-
ship with all in our neigh-
borhood. There have been
those who have tried to in-
still fear and panic in the in-
habitants of our area. It is
up to us to make sure that
they do not succeed.
"It is therefore in-
cumbent on every Jew to
protect these institutions
and the beautiful neighbor-
hood we have built. Moving
from this neighborhood and
thereby zausing the eventu-
al demise of these in-
stitutions is totally against
the Halakha. This is in ac-
cordance with the rulings of
Rav Moshe Feinstein and
the Lubavitcher Rebbe.
"The Vaad Harabonim
therefore calls on the entire
community to remain in
our area and unite in contin-
uing the spirit of friendship
and brotherhood."
Attending the meeting
were Rabbis Leizer Levin,
Beret Shemtov, David Lie-
berman, Shalom Goldstein,
Feivel Wagner, Moshe
Schwab and Sol Frankel.
Also attending was Harry
Gordon.
It was noted that Rabbi
James I. Gordon, who is re-
cuperating from surgery,
was unable to attend, but
endorsed the statement.
The rabbis agreed to de-
liver sermons on the impor-
tance of neighborhood stabi-
lization and encourage their
fellow rabbis to do the
same.
