A N D
BITS
PIECES...Fast approaching
the autumn years of one's
life and reflecting on grow-
ing up in Detroit and won-
dering how many of your
contemporaries can remem-
ber Montcalm and Hastings
St. where we moved after
leaving New York Har-
bor...getting off the boat
from Dublin, Ireland and
still a baby in Mother's
arms.
What excitement must
have been felt from the
thousands who had touched
the shores of the 'promised
land'...the fears and con-
cern of adjusting to the
hustle and bustle of Amer-
ica...the land of the free
and the home of the brave.
Growing up and remem-
bering the old Montcalm
Theater with the open-air
candy store offering penny
candy...you could fill up a
bag of the delicious con-
fections for a nickel (if you
were that prosperous). For-
est and Hastings boasted
the fabulous Winter Gar-
dens where you could spend
the better part of the day at
fun and games for a quar-
ter.

Rides to Belle Isle in
Uncle Sidney's big Reo,
packing 12 people in that
luxury car along with deli
and fruit and rye bread and
pop and lemonade, etc. Ca-
noeing in the lagoon and lis-
tening to the tinny sounds
of "victrola music like "My
Little Margie," "Sweet
Sue" and "Dardenella." Oh
what a time to look forward
to, each summer Sunday (if
it didn't rain).

Moving up to Frederick
St. and going to the famous
Garfield School where one
can remember the princi-
pal, Mr. Gunn, whose claim
to fame was a little rubber
hose that kept the students
in check... and this with the
consent of the parents. How
many of you lawyers, mer-
chants, doctors, etc. can re-
call that humble beginning?
Later on to Kirby St.
across from the Detroit
Tennis Club and forgot how
many times we were the
ball-boy for such tennis
luminaries as Bill Tilden,
Vincent Richards and the
local Bielfield boys who
were tennis champs. How
many of you had your own
garden in the back of the
Art Institute on Kirby at
Woodward and got sick eat-
ing too many kohlrabi and
radishes?
Recall the double-decker
buses on Dexter, the good
old street-cars that took
you wherever you wanted
to go... for 6 cents? Thrilled
at being accepted by the
AZA. Overwhelmed when
given an art scholarship by
the beloved and venerable
Fred Butzel.

Moving up to Normandy
St. and going to Central
High and later on to
Twelfth St. where the Trum-
bull St. cars took you to
Navin Field for the ball
games. The then famous
Lerman's Juvenile Concert
Band where, who else,
brother Iry (Shnoz) was the
concert-master...and whose
trumpet took him later to
all the big bands.
BILL CAPLAN and Ernie
Iczkovitz recalling the
World War II days when
MP Bill was the personal es-
cort of- such famous gener-
als as Patton etc:, and
Ernie with the finance de-
partment of the army.
They remember one day
on leave they both acciden-
tally came across an old
building somewhere in
France, with the front door
slightly ajar. they went in
to see millions of $1 bills
stacked to the roof in bun-
dles of 1,000...they both
broke out in a sweat, vir-
tually overwhelmed with
this find and probably vi-
sions of grandeur flashed
through their minds, when
upon checking the currency
they found it to be propa-
ganda money put there by
the s Germans.
One side of the bill was
perfectly printed but the
other side read, 'American
money is worthless!' and
other such drivel.

MOREY

CHARMER

charmed the 147-yard hole
at the Hillcrest Country
Club in Florida recently for
his first hole-in-one in 40
years of playing golf.

HARMON AND HELEN
JAFFE contemplating liv-

ing in sunny California for
nine months out of the
year...a pregnant idea, but
we'll miss you.

THE

BEAUTIFUL

PEOPLE...Barry and Bar-
bara Rosenfeld along with
their kids at Pine Knob
most every Wednes-
day...Kimberly and Bradley
ldve it.

Ak lER BILL AND
DONNA ORAM took their

offspring, Julie and Robyn
to Sea World in Cleve-
land...the youngsters refuse
to eat tuna fish or any
other kind of fish, but they
all had a:whale' of a time.
BEN TEITEL just pur-
chased a sea cruiser to go
along with his land cruiser,
an Excalibur...along with
about 700 apartment units
in four or five towns and
still building...what a long
way for the guy who used
to cut meat on Twelfth St.
Warm-hearted Ben keeps
sayin', "You never get a
second chance to make a
good first impression."
ROSE SMITH telling her
husband Abe that there is
nothing quite so annoying
as to have someone go
right on talking when
you're interrupting.
