cape from a Rome military
prison to West Germany
last month, denied that any
official German authority
or any group had aided in
the escape attempt.
Shealso denied receiving
financial aid for the escape
from any group, but admit-
ted—during a TV inter-
view—that she had received
money from various groups
representing former SS
members. She defended
these donations on the
grounds ttiat she had spent
her entire savings—even
jewelry inherited from her
mother—to try and secure
her husband's release and
to care for him while he
was a prisoner.
Frau Kappler said she
had received messages of
support from people all
over the world. She defend-
ed her husband's shooting
of 335 Italian Jews and non-
Jews in 1941 in reprisal for
a partisan attack on
Rome's SS headquarters,
saying he was acting under
orders.
Bonn has denied German

In a related development,
concern over the spread of
neo-Nazism in West Ger-
many reached the White
House when the Mayor of
West Berlin, Dietrich
Stobbe, paid a courtesy call
on President Carter.
Vice President Walter
Mondale, who joined in the
meeting, raised the ques-
tion of growing ultra-right
extremism that former Ger-
man Chancellor Willy
Brandt had dealt with re-
cently in a letter to the
Chancellor Helmut
Schmidt.
The Berlin Mayor said
that left-wing extremists in
Germany are "the main
problem just now, but
Brandt warned the German
people of the danger on the
other end of the political
spectrum."
Meanwhile, a Cleveland
mechanic has been accused
by federal officials of partic-

of World War II atrocities
while he served as a guard
at a German concentration
camp in Poland.

Ruling on Artificial
Insemination Made

TEL AVIV (JTA)—The
Haifa Rabbinical Court has
ruled that artificial in-
semination with- sperm
from an anonymous donor
is not adultery if the
woman's husband had con-
sented in writing for the
procedure to take place.
The new ruling involve& a
divorce case in which the
husband claimed his wife
had committed adultery by
having a child through arti-
fical insemination. He said
that since the child was not
his he should not have to
support the child.
The .court ruled that his
wife did not commit adul-
tery since he had consented
to the procedure after he
found out that he was ster-
ile and ordered him to pay
IL 5,000 a year for the up-
keep of the child.

Church May Delete
Anti-Semitic Hymn

WASHINGTON — The
leadership of the American
Lutheran Church has asked
that the minister's edition
of the propo: inter-Lu-
theran Book of Worship de-
lete the hymn "Repr-
oaches" from Good Friday
services.
The action was com-
mended by the Anti-Defa-
mation League of Bnai
Brith.
The "Reproaches," a
hymn also known as the
"Improperia," consists of
two medieval poems that ac-
cused the Jews of in-
gratitude for their deliv-
erance from Egypt and
held them collectively re-
sponsible for? .the, crucifi-
