THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS
Former Detroiter
Quits Chicago Post
Danny Raskin's
LISTENING
POST
JERRY KALMAN at Sen-
try Drugs on 10 Mile Rd.
and Southfield, gets more
than just calls for pre-
scriptions...Could be most
anything, and Jerry usually
has the answers...for both
young folks and adults.
He talks kids out of over-
dosing with drugs...called
911 when a woman told
about her nitro glycerin
pills not working (she was
having a heart at-
tack)...answers questions
galore...especially when
something pertaining to
drugs is on tele-
vision...Regardless of what
the commentator says,
Jerry is asked whether or
not it is alright to take what-
ever is discussed.
Jerry is the gent who
makes certain that Randy
Kahn gets whatever drugs
he needs... Although Randy
receives medical assistance
from the State, it is very
slow in coming...Money or
not, Jerry doesn't let
Randy down... certainly a
great attribute from a num-
ber one citizen of whom
this world could sure use
more of.
THANKS TO... Lou Sarko
for those vanilla smelling
cigars...Taste like tobacco
and have a pleasant odor.
LAST YEAR a man
looked at a very expensive
set of math books totalling
$130 at the Brandeis Book
Sale...Ada Glazer (B. Ben-
edict) was helping him at
the section of books that
contained sets... He kept
looking at the books, walk-
ing away, and coming
back...Finally, the gent said
to Ada, "Would you please
watch these books for me
about 15 minutes? I have to
make a phone call."...
When he returned he told
Ada that he had to call his
wife and ask what to do be-
cause they had been saving
money for a new sewing
machine for her...a choice
had to be made between
the new sewing machine
and the valuable § ,et of
books...His wife told him to
buy the books...and Ada
says you never saw anyone
so thrilled.
16th Annual Used Book
Sale by Brandeis continues
til Sept. 7 at its new loca-
tion...Tel-12 Mall...covering
almost every conceivable
category in hard and paper
backs, collected throughout
the year from personal li-
braries, private collections
and estates.
IT WAS A STRONG first-
time feeling for Sylvia and
Al May when they met in
Washington, D.C....Sylvia
went home and told her fa-
ther about meeting the man
she was going to
marry...and Al told his sis-
ter about meeting the girl
he was going to
marry...They'll be wed 49
years.

Former Detroiter Lois

after 25 years as director
and assistant director of the
Women's Division of the
Jewish United Fund of Met-
ropolitan Chicago.

fice...Call 354-6100.
DEFINITE ENTERTAIN-
MENT is set for the Cres-
cent Shrine Annual Dinner-
Dance, which has been
changed from a Monday
evening to Sunday, Oct. 23,
at Raleigh House...Johnny
Yune, very talented singer
with much crowd pleasing
versatility, will do the show
honors with Hal Gordon's
ork...Entertainment during
reception and dinner music
will be by the Three Blend-
ers.
BOB WEBB
WRITES... "One of the only
gas stations I know of that
invariably will wash all the
windows on your car while
you are getting a fillup is
Roy Hayes' Mobil station
on Nine Mile and Tele-
graph, a practice that Roy
has adhered to in rain or
sunshine or snow for 39
years at the same loca-
tion."
FRANCES AND SOL
Adler, former builder, are
now ex-Detroiters...As of
Labor Day, they become
residents of Sherman Oaks,
Calif....(4637 Willis, 91403).
DETROIT BUSINESS-
MEN'S Group, City of
Hope, annual black tie din-
ner-dance at Michigan Inn,
Oct. 16, is by in-
vitation...with members re-
questing invites be sent to
friends who would like to at-
tend this high caliber
event...Max Sosin is presi-
dent of the Detroit Business-
men's Group...and past
president Harry Brodsky is
head of this year's affair.
LOOKING BACK ON
COLUMNS OF YESTE-
RYEARS...
Aug. 21, 1953... "Martin
Ochin tells about Eleizer
Kaplan, finance minister of
Israel, seeking to steer
clear of the Soviet orbit,
journeying to these shores
to float a $500 million bond
issue...The directors of a
conservative Wall Street
banking house listened cour-
teously to his story, and
then the chairman asked
him, "Would it be possible,
Mr. Kaplan, to let us see Is-
rael's last three annual bal-
ance sheets ?...Kaplan an-
sWered, "The last two, Mr.
Chairman, I can produce
without difficulty. The one
before that, I am afraid, dis-
appeared when the Temple
was destroyed in 586 BCE"
Oct. 15, 1954... "It wasn't
too long ago that George
Green came out alive after
being in an airplane
crash...and now wife Sylvia
is definitely an avid believ-
er in fate...George is the
regular trombonist in Russ
Weaver's orchestra...but
had asked that a substitute
take his place for the re-
cent Duartian Dance at
Edgewater Park...His re-
placement died in the trag-
ic fire.''
