The Tree of Life sculpture in plaster is the work of a reli-
giously observant Ethiopian Jew who created the piece in
gratitude for his wife's recovery from a serious illness.
The son of an Ethiopian Jewess and Sudanese Arab, Abra-
ham Jacob Asheber Abebe Hallelbbaammll is a partici-
pant in minyanim at the Downtown Synagogue whose con-
gregation encouraged the manufacture of the sculpture.
***
A devout, Sabbath-observ-
ing, Hebrew-speaking Ethio-
pian Jew has devoted him-
self to making a Tree of
Life and a Tower of Knowl-
edge out of plaster. It em-
phasizes the values of the
Decalogue and of the
Torah.
A daily participant in the
religious services of the
Downtown Synagogue, he
has been encouraged in his
task by the rabbi and offi-
cers of the congregation,
and the product he makes,
all individually created, has
been placed on the market
with their encouragement
and blessings. The product,
its maker and his back-
ground are described in the
Ethiopian Jew's own words
in the statement he has pen-
ned:
"My name is Abraham
Jacob Asheber Abebe Hal-
lelbbaammii.
"I was born in Ethiopia
in 1921 and came to the
United States in 1922. My
mother was an Ethiopian
Jewess and my father was
a Sudanese Arab. My wife
Sarah is an American-born
Jewess, descendant of Tan-
zanian Hebrews.' We have
two daughters, Rivkoh and
Rochel.
"We had lost our business
downtown on Monroe St.
My wife got sick, went into
the hospital, was very ill
and almost died. About a
week after she was in the
hospital I said my prayers
to thank God for His many
blessings and ask Him to
make my wife well again,
and to help me financially.
This is when God gave me
the vision of this Holy
Throne (Tree of Life sculp-
ture). He told me my wife
would get well and that

the congregants at the
Downtown Synagogue this
Holy Throne came into real-
ity."
