More than 400 persons
paid tribute to David P.
and Evelyn Zack Wednes-
day at a dinner in their
honor at Cong. Shaarey
Zadek held on behalf of the
Jewish National Fund.
A forest of 10,000 trees,
planted in their honor in the
American Bicentennial for-
est in Jerusalem, was pre-
sented to the honorees. The
couple also was presented
with a menora "in appre-
ciation for their services to
Jewry and Israel." Their
son-in-law, Stephen Cooper,
a member of the Southfield
City Council, presented the
couple with a state procla-
mation paying tribute to the
Zacks. The tribute was sign-
ed by Gov. William G. Milli-
ken, House majority leader
Joseph Forbes, Speaker of
the House Bobby Crim, Sen-
ate Floor Leader William
Faust and by state Senators
Jack Faxon and Daniel Coo-
per.
Guest speaker Moshe
Landau, deputy president of
the Supreme Court of the
state of Israel, related his
views on the current Israeli
situation.
Referring to the recent Is-
raeli election, Judge Land-
au said that the "transition
to a new government was
achieved smoothly.
"The lack of demonstra-
tions by the people showed
the maturity of all con-
cerned," he said.
On the prospects for
peace in the Middle East
Judge Landau said that
peace "should be ap-
proached soberly and cau-
tiously.
"We can't gamble with
our futures. It's literally a
matter of life and death.

`Carter Told No Secrets in Talk
With Goren,' Powell Asserts
WASHINGTON (JTA)—
Jody Powell, President Car-
ter's Press Secretary, said
last week that the Presi-
dent did not tell Israel's
Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi,
Shlomo Goren last Wednes-
day. "anything the Presi-
dent has not already said
publicly."
Powell gave his response
when he was asked to com-
ment on Rabbi Goren's ver-
sion of the Goren conversa-
tion with the President.
Rabbi Goren said Presi-
dent Carter told him that
he has not been talking of a
separate state for the Pales-
tinians. Goren said the Pres-
ident said that when he re-
ferred to a homeland for
the Palestinians he meant a
solution to the refugee prob-
lem and "I mean it through
,Jordan."

Regarding the possibility
of a Palestinian homeland
in the Middle East, Judge
Landau said that it could
mean the establishment of
a Soviet base in the Holy
Land.
"If a Palestinian home-
land can be achieved by an
agreement with King Hus-
sein of Jordan, then a Pales-
tinian homeland can exist,"
He warned, however, that it
would be ruled by young Pa-
lestinians, who are angry
and radical in their actions.
He said Israel will never
go back to the pre-1967 bor-
ders, however, "the major-

CHIEF RABBI GOREN
When a reporter said this
means the President op-
poses a Palestinian state,
Goren replied, "definitely,
definitely."
Goren said the Presi-
dent's remarks came when
he asked him for a message
to bring back to the people
of Israel. He said Carter
told him first of all the
United States will maintain
and increase the historic
friendship between the U.S.
and Israel. The President
told Goren the U.S. will re-
main responsible for the
security of Israel, he said.
The Chief Rabbi also re-
