two reports on the tiny Jew-

The history of the Bar-
stow Jewish community, lo-
cated about 150 miles from
Los Angeles, was described
in a recent issue of Ha'am,
the Jewish student pub-
lication at the University of
California at Los Angeles,
by a staff writer, Beth
Sochis.
Her report was supple-

Congregations, the national
agency of American Re-
form synagogues. The
UAHC provided data on the
Barstow saga obtained
from Rabbi Erwin L. Her-
man, UAHC southwest re-
gional director.
Ms. Sochis reported that
the eight families "scat-
tered in the small desert
community" discovered
each other in 1956 "and
joined together to share
their Jewishness."
Rabbi Herman expressed
the belief that the congrega-
tion's location, "a water-
stop between Los Angeles
and Las Vegas," would pre-
vent any "meaningful
growth" for the tiny congre-
gation. He added that the
congregation symbolized
"the stubborness of Jews
who want to adhere to reli-
gious Judaism."
Ms. Sochis presented a
more pessimistic predic-
tion. She wrote that the re-
maining Jewish fami-
lies—listed by her as eight
and by Rabbi Herman as
nine—were making plans to
leave the area "as soon as
their children have entered
college" and more Jewish
families with young chil-
dren "are not coming to
Barstow."
She reported that plans
are being made for the last
family to sell the syna-
gogue building, indicating
that the disappearance of
the minuscule community
was not far off.
