Herzog BlastsSyrian Letter
to UN Calling for Israel's End

UNITED NATIONS
(JTA)—Israel's Ambassa-
dor to the United Nations,
Chaim Herzog, sent a letter
to Secretary General Kurt
Waldheim protesting a Syr-
ian letter which called in ef-
fect for the destruction of Is-
. rael.
The Syrian letter, issued
on the occasion of African
Liberation' Day and sent to
Waldheim and to all UN
representatives, stated that
Syria was committed to
struggle until Zionism was
"finally eliminated."
In his letter to Waldheim,
Herzog wrote that Israel
regretted Syria's undis-
guised exploitation of Afri-
can Liberation Day for the
purpose of pursuing its unre-
lenting political warfare
against Israel. The Syrian

letter, Herzog continued,
"gives the lie to the ful-
some professions of peace-
ful intentions voiced recent-
ly by Syrian leaders. It also
undermines the efforts cur-
rently being made to ad-
vance the process of nego-
tiation toward genuine
peace in the Mideast."
The Israeli envoy reite-
rated Israel's readiness to.
conduct peace negotiations
with Syria at any time on
the basis of Security Coun-
cil Resolutions 242 and 338.
