National Jewish Hospital Receives
$140,000 from Detroit Fundraiser

Mrs. Griffiths was cited
with 'the National Jewish
Hospital's National Human-
itarian Award for "improv-
ing the quality of life in her
community."
Dinner treasurer Alan E.
Schwartz presented a check
with the dinner proceeds to
Harold Marko, a dinner co-
chairman and member of
NJH's board. Approx-
imately 800 persons attend-
ed the affair, which includ-
ed" a large cross-section of
the Detroit community.
Jeanne Thorburn, wife of
Oakland County Circuit
Judge James Thorburn,
gave the audience a
patient's view of NJH, a
non-sectarian facility which
formerly admitted only in-
digent patients.
She described the excel-
lent patient care she re-
ceived from the hospital
staff, and help she received
as an asthmatic after being

The Detroit fund-raising
campaign for the National
Jewish Hospital and Re-
search Center in Denver
grossed $140,000 for the res-
piratory disease treatment
and research facility.
The total was announced
Monday evening at a ban-
quet at the Plaza Hotel in
honor of Martha Griffiths,
former Detroit Congress-
woman.

tional medical centers.
Dr. Charles May, one of
75 senior scientists and phy-
sicians on the hospital's
staff of 350 professionals, de-
scribed some of the work
and research conducted at
NJH.
The hospital has a $14 mil-
lion annual budget, Dr.
May said, and has a $27 mil-
lion expansion program and
children's treatment center
under construction.
In her remarks, Mrs.
Griffiths thanked the hospi-
tal for honoring her and
cited NJH for its work.
Other participants in the
program included dinner
chairman and co-chairman
Robert M. Surdam and
Edwin G. Roberts, and
Paul S. Mirabito.
Rabbi Richard C. Hertz
of Temple Beth El gave the
invocation and Rev. Mal-
colm Carron of the Univer-
sity of Detroit gave the ben-
ediction.

JNF Will Honor Area Graduates

The Jewish National
Fund will plant a tree in Is-
rael in honor of each of the
graduates, confirmands and
consecrants of all Hebrew
schools, day schools, and
synagogue and temple
schools, it was announced
by Mark E. Schlussel, presi-
dent of JNF, and Percy
Kaplan, executive director.
A tree certificate will be
presented to the students as
a gift from JNF.
JNF, has asked __school,
synagogue and temple offi-
cials to provide the names
and addtesses of the gradu-
ates, confirmands and con-
secrants. and the dates of
