John E. Bryan has ap-
pended to his book -"Small
World Vegetable Garden-
ing" the subtitle "Growing
Your Own in Limited
Syaces."
The publishers, 101 Pro-
ductions of San Francisco,
timed the volume perfectly
as a guide for vegetable
growers.
In an introductory chap-
ter on vegetable culture,
Bryan discusses various
ways of increasing crop
yield in a limited space and
of prolonging the growing
season. These include the
French intensive method,
raised planting beds,
cloches and gardening
under lights. General direc-
tions are also given for cul-
tivation of' the soil, seed
sowing, mulching and ferti-
lizing, composts and pest—
disease control.

The bulk of the book is de-
voted to several pages on
each of 43 vegetables and
herbs suitable to growing in
limited spaces. Another sec-
tion tells how 19 of these
vegetables may be grown
in containers. Full-page
drawings by Cathy Greene
accompany the test.
Bryan concludes the book
with crop rotation plans for
small gardens in four differ-
ent climates whose growing
seaaons range from 120
days to 365 days. There is
also a listing of recommend-
ed vegetable varieties for
small gardens, first and
last frost dates of 166 geog-
raphic locales in North
America, and sources for or-
dering seeds by mail.
