Israeli Lawyer to Observe
Maidanek War Crimes Trial

JERUSALEM (JTA)—Is-
rael will send a government
legal expert to serve as an
observer at the ongoing
trial of Maidanek concentra-
tion camp guards in West
Germany, it was announced
at Monday's Cabinet meet-
ing. Shlorno Avineri, direc-
tor general of the Foreign
Ministry, said the impres-
sion in Israel is that the
trial was being drawn out
needlessly. It has been in
progress for several years.
The prolongation of the
Maidanek war crimes trial
apparently motivated the
seizure of part of the West
German Embassy building
in Tel Aviv last Thursday
by two armed men wearing
the yellow Star of David,
emblem of concentration
camp inmates. They were
identified as Henri Toronc-
zik, 34, a Holocaust survi-
vor and Andre Kilczinski,
40, a Polish convert to
Judaism.
They used the occasion of
Holocaust Remembrance
Day to lock themselves in
on the second floor of the
Embassy where they re-
mained for six and a half
hours. They threatened to
use their guns and grenades

if police tried to evacuate
them.
They said they were pro-
testing "because we believe
the world is indifferent to
what happened to the Jew-
ish people and to what is
happening in Germany
today."
The men left the Em-
bassy–as they had promised
when Holocaust Remem-
brance Day officially ended
at sundown.
In Amsterdam, hitherto
unpublished disclosures of
how Dutch police helped
the Nazis round up Dutch
Jews and others for deporta-
tion to concentration camps
during World War II, ap-
pear in the current issue of
the weekly Accent which
has obtained the secret files
of the post-war Police Crim-
inal Investigation Depart-
ment (PRA).

In the first of a series of
articles on Dutch collabora-
tors, Accent reported that
some 17,000 Jews in The
Hague were arrested and
deported by Hague police
'who, in some cases, appro-
priated Jewish property for
their own use. They also as-
sisted Amsterdam police to
round up Jews in Amster-
dam's old Jewish quarter,
the report said.

None of these policemen
was ever prosecuted after
the war, except for a few
who were officially mem-
bers of the Dutch Nazi
Party. According to Accent,
several police collaborators
were appointed to PRA
after the war to conduct in-
vestigations into the war-
time activities of other
Dutch collaborators.

Last week in New York,
Eugene Gold, chairman of
the National Conference on
Soviet Jewry, accused So-
viet authorities of trying to
deny Jews in the USSR the
right to commemorate the
deaths of six million Jews
in the Nazi Holocaust.
Also in New York last
week, the Cathedral Church
of St. John The Divine
marked Holocaust Day for
the first time with a Serv-
ice of Remembrance for
the Six Million. The one-
hour observance sponsored
by the Episcopal Cathedral
in cooperation with the New
York regional board of the
Anti-Defamation League of
Bnai Brith.
