Rabbi Hertz Consoles Family
of Abducted Timothy King

Rabbi Richard C. Hertz
of Temple Beth El was
asked to participate in the
funeral mass for Timothy
King, the 11-year-old Bir-
mingham youth wno was re-
cently abducted and found
murdered.
Rabbi Hertz said he was
told that the family asked a
rabbi to participate so that
the funeral would be a com-
munity ecumenical service.
Rabbi Hertz accepted the
invitation to participate,
and told mourners the story
in Chapter 12 of II Samuel:
how King David fasted and
prayed for seven days while
his son was dying.

After the boy died David
ended his fast and did not
weep. "While the child was
still alive, I fasted and wept
and prayed. Maybe the
Lord would be merciful and
spare the child. But now he
is dead. Why should I fast
any longer? Can I bring
him back? I will go to him
someday, but he can never
come back to me."

Rabbi Hertz also recited
the 23rd Psalm at the funer-
al, and asked his own con-
gregation at Shabat serv-
ices that evening to say
Kadish for Timothy King.
