`Ancient Rabbis Did Amend
Various Laws of the Torah'

Editor, The Jewish News:
I 'understand Rabbi
Silberberg's dismay- at
the late .Prof. Zeitli n's
contention that "the
sages (of the Second
Jewish Commonwealth)
did not hesitate to inter-
pret and amend the pen-
tateuchal laws"
(Reader's Forum 2-11). -
Such a statement is as-
suredly a radical one. But
even a cursory . examina-
tion of the contemporary
literature (the Mishna)
reveals that the rabbis
did change the prescrip-
tions of divine writ.
The Torah legislates
(Num. 5:11-31) that a sus-
pected adulteress was to
be given the "bitter wat-
ers" to discern her guilt
or lack of it. "When adul-
terersbecame many,"
however, the rabbis
abolished this rite (Mis-
hna Sota 9:9).

Volume Honors
Dropsie's Katsh

PHILADELPHIA —
'"Halutz V'Maas,'.' an il-
lustrated jubilee volume
in honor of Dr. Abraham
I. KatsFi, was edited by
Dr. Yaacov. Ben-Joseph
and published in Israel by
the Avuka Press of Tel
Aviv. Dr. Ben-Joseph was
a student of Dr. Katsh at
New York University,
where he was the director
of Judaica studies before
coming to The Dropsie
University. •
Dr. Katsh is now presi-
dent emeritus and Dis-
tinguished Research Pro-
fessor at Dropsie.
"Halutz V'Maas,"
which literally means
"Pioneer and Doer," is a
collection of studies, both
in Hebrew and English.
The Hebrew articles were
written by prominent Is-
raeli scholars and
educators. The English
section of the volume is a
collection of eight
selected articles written
by Dr. Katsh in recent
years. The volume also
includes a summary of all
Dr. Katsh's published
books.
Dr. Ben-Joseph is as-
sociated with the educa-
tion Department in Tel
Aviv and is principal of a
high school there.

Young Volunteers
Leave for Israel

NEW YORK — Forty-
five young people have
left the U.S. for Israel to
study Hebrew and work
for half a year as-volun-
teers in kibutzim and de-
Velopment towns.
The group, which left
Wednesday consists of
volunteers on Project
Etgar and Project De-
velopment Town, two
programs in Israel spon-
sored by the American
Zionist-Youth Founda-
tion.

when a body was found,
and the murderer un-
known, the elders of the
nearest town took a
heifer and killed it as an
atonement. "When mur-
derers became m‘any, -
however, this, too, was
discontinued (Mishna
Sota). The examples could
be multiplied.
-Clearly,
then,, the
.halakhic authorities (the
rabbis) of that time ,not
only possessed the power
to set aside a behest of the
Torah; indeed, ' the
employed it.
The issue today is
whether, should it be re-
quisite, there is a body of
sufficient stature and au-
thority to effect such
change. That is another
question. But to assert, in
Rabbi Silberberg's words,
that "these G-d given
laws, according to Torah
tradition .. : havp never
been amended" is to deny
both history and the all-
embracing wisdom Wand
sensitivity of the rabbis
to keep Jewish law and
life vibrant and operative
in the midst of the world
around them.
