one of the Soviet Union's
leading musicians.
Rudolph Barshai, who
founded the Moscow
Chamber Orchestra in
1955, said on his arrival
Sunday that he planned
to settle in Israel and
work there.
He said he has been of-
fered the musical direc-
torship of the Israeli
Chamber Ensemble.
Barshai, 52, recognized
as one of the foremost in-
terpreters of Mozart, left
the Soviet Union earlier
last month and spent some
time in Vienna and Lon-
don.
He said he emigrated

Two Cited for Aid
to Israel Elderly
NEW YORK — Two so-
cial workers specializing
in service to the elderly
were honored for develop-
ing new programs to ease
the lot of Israel's growing
older population, it was
announced by Ralph I.
Goldman, executive vice
president of the Joint Dis-
tribution Committee.
The two, Mrs. Hadas-
sah Avital, director of the
Social Welfare Depart-
ment of Kfar Saba, and
Leo Blumensohn, direc-
tor of the National Insur-
ance Institute's Counsel-
ing Services for Pension-
ers and Elderly, were
awarded the IL 3,500 (ab-
out $338) Eshel prizes for
1976-77.
Eshel, the Association
for the Planning and De-
velopment of Services for
the Aged in Israel, was
founded by JDC-Malben,
and is supported equally
by the Israel government
and the AmericariJewish
Joint Distribution Com-
mittee in Israel. The JDC
receives funds for its pro-
grams in Israel mainly
from the United Jewish
Appeal.
