Scali Calls for Mideast Peace Offensive

Saying that the United
States can not afford to
lose "the greatest oppor-
tunity for peace in two
decades," former U.S.
Ambassador to the Un-
ited Nations John Scali
said that President-Elect
Jimmy Carter should ap-
point his Secretary of
State within the next two
weeks and try to complete
a major Middle East
peace initiative by the
end of February.
Scali, speaking Sunday
at the Beth Yehudah
Schools annual dinner at
the Fairlane Manor in
Dearborn, said that the
Israeli government
would be prohibited by its
own election pressures
from making major con-
cessions much after Feb-
ruary, and said Carter
must emphasize the need
for a Geneva peace con-
ference in early 1977.

Rossen. Rabinowitz was
cited with the Beth
Yehudah Golden Torah
Award for his efforts on
behalf of the schools, and
Rossen was honored for
his endowement of a col-
lege wing for the schools.
David Hermelin ac-
cepted the award for Ros-
sen, who is returning
from Israel.
The dinner was chaired
by I. William Sherr and
David B. Holtzman, and
Rabbi David M. Lieber-
man presented the
awards. Dr. Henry Baum
sang the national an-
thems. Julius Rotenberg
led the Hamotzi and
Meyer Weingarden led
the Birkat Hamazon.

Mizrachi Plans

national president of Re-
ligious Zionists of
America, will be the guest
speaker at a public meet-
ing of the Mizrachi-
Hapoel Hamizrachi of
Detroit 8 p.m. Dec. 5 at
Young Israel of Oak-

Rabbi Bernstein will
speak on "Update of Our
Role in Israel and the
Zionist Congress." He is
the former national pres-
ident of the Rabbinical
Council of America, rabbi
