The discussion on the
report by the 20-member
Committee on the Exer-
cise of the Inalienable
Rights of the Palestinian
people which began Nov.
15 was expected to end
Wednesday. The report
recommends the with-
drawal of Israeli forces
from occupied Arab ter-
ritories and the estab-
lishment of a Palestinian
entity under the aegis of
the Palestine Liberation
Organization.
According to sources
here the resolution would
call on the assembly to
endorse the report and
extend the mandate of
the committee for
another year. The
sources said that the
West European countries
are likely to abstain on
the resolution and that

Israel Population
Figures Released
JERUSALEM (ZINS)
— In the official year book
of statistics, which will
appear shortly, the fol-
lowing details about Is-
rael appear: In 15 years
the Jewish population in
Israel (not counting the
administered sectors) will
reach 4 million, i.e., 76 per
cent of the total popula-
tion.
The non-Jewish popu-
lation in- 1990 will reach
one million and will com-
prise 24 per cent of the
total population corn-
pared with 15 per cent at
the present time. These
figures are based on a
yearly immigration of
25,800. In the last two
years 12 to 14,000 have
emigrated from Israel.
For the first time in the
history of Israel, women
outnumber men. In 1975,
there were 998 men to
every 1,000 women. On
the average, women out-
live men — 74.5 years for
a woman and 71 years for
a man.
However, in 1975, 164
women committed suicide
compared with 108 men,
and 989 women attemp-
ted suicide - compared
with 450 men.

Israel Hails Entry
Into UNESCO Unit
JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Israel's acceptance into
the European regional
group of UNESCO by
majority vote of that
group's membership was
hailed by the foreign
ministry Tuesday as the
proper answer to the con-
certed Arab effort since
1974 to have Israel expel-
led from that body. The
acceptance was an-
nounced by Taitta
Ioweett of Kenya at the
full session of the UN-
ESCO conference in
Nairobi.
The only opposition
came from the Corn-
munist bloc. East Ger-
many, acting as its
spokesman claimed that
since Israel was not a
European country its ac-
ceptance should have
been conditioned on a
unanimous vote.
A number of Arab coun-
tries abstained from vot-
ing on the procedure
under which a state can
apply to join the regional
group of its choice, subject
to the agreement of
majority of its members.
They said they did not op-
pose the procedure be-
cause they wanted the
Nairobi conference to suc-
ceed.
At the same time, how-
ever, UNESCO, at a gen-
eral conference in
Nairobi, voted 61-5 with
28 abstentions to con-
demn Israel's cultural
and educational policies
in the occupied territories
charging that Israeli ac-
tions amounted to "cul-
tural assimilation." The
adoption of this resolu-
tion was reportedly the
price demanded by the
Soviet- bloc nations and
the Arabs for agreeing to
Israel's return to the reg-
ional group. The United
States voted against the
resolution.

JO 6-4640
NEW YORK — Rabbi
Ira Eisenstein, president
of the Reconstructionist
Rabbinical College and
the Jewish Reconstruc-
tionist Foundation, has
called for the establish-
ment of all-day high
schools sponsored by the
Jewish Reconstructionist
Movement.
Rabbi Eisenstein was
feted by the Jewish Re-
constructionist Founda-
tion on the occasion of his
70th birthday at a dinner
at the St. Regis Hotel
Saturday.
"We must reach the
young people before they
get to college," Dr.
Eisenstein said. "Our
young often suffer cul-
ture shock from the de-
vastating effects of their
courses and from the
apathy and ignorance of
their peers."
the resolution "out of
hand."
Meanwhile, it was
learned. that at least two
members of the Palestine
Committee are trying to
convince the other mem-
bers that European states
which have diplomatic re-
lations with Israel should
be urged to join the com-
mittee. Sixteen of the 20
members of the committee)
have no diplomatic rela-
tions with Israel.
Next week Israel is ex-
pected to be a target once
again when the General
Assembly begins a debate
on the Middle East.
