Agudath Israel Agencies Help Soviet Emigres
NEW YORK — For two
Russian Jewish families
now living in the U.S., the
ritual and celebration of
the Jewish "simha" was
introduced into their
lives by two agencies of
Agudath Israel of
America.
Sasha Deutch, his
SAM
BARNETT
AND HIS ORCHESTRA

young wife and daughter,
here only since July,
marked the circumcision
of their newborn son on
Oct. 6 at ceremonies ar-
ranged by the reach-out
program of Agudath Is-
rael of America, the
Jewish Education Prog-
ram. Three weeks later,
Marek Warsczawski was
married to Rachel Glus-
kaya, in this country only
two years, at a ceremony
at the Boro Park Senior
Citizens Center of

The Deutch story
began to unfold in July
when the family moved
into its new home in
Brooklyn's Flatbush sec-
tion. Although faced with
the many calamities of
adjusting to a strange
society, their priority was
to secure a Jewish educa-
tion for little Ilana, age 7.
Referred to the Agudath
Israel reach-out agency
by neighbors, the girl and
her mother received daily
tutoring in both Hebrew
and English from J.E.P.
activists. The agency also
placed Ilana in a day
camp in August, while
her mother continued re-
ceiving private instruc-
tion on the basics of
Jewish law and culture.
When the school year
opened, Ilana was enrolled
in Bais Yaakov D'Rav
Meir, a girls' school in
Flatbush. When the
Deutch's gave birth to a
healthy little son, J.E.P.
arranged for the bris.
For Marek
Warsczawski, in his early
60's, there was also cause
for celebration. A former
actor in the Soviet Union,
he spent the last decade
of his life in the United
States searching for a
meaningful job and for a
new life.
The organization's job
training agency, Project
COPE, has served more
than 900 Russian Jews in
the United States since
1975. In addition,
Agudath Israel publishes
a newsletter in Russian.
`Klezmeri Artist
to Have U.S. Tour
NEW YORK — Giora
Feidman, bass clarinetist
with the Israel Philhar-
monic Orchestra, and Is-
rael's leading performer
of "Klezmer" music —the
traditional tunes played
at weddings and other
festive occasions by gen-
erations of European
Jewish musicians — will
tour the United States
and Canada through ar-
rangements made by the
Ministry of Education
and Culture of Israel, the
Youth and Hechalutz
Department of the World
Zionist Organization and
Jewish Welfare Board.
Arrangements for per-
formances by Feidman
may be made through the
JWB Lecture Bureau, 15
East 26th Street, New
York, N.Y. 10010.
Czechs Purging
History of Nazis
LONDON — The gov-
ernment of Czechos-
lovakia is intensifying its
purge of books on the
Nazi occupation of that
country which do not fol-
low Communist ideology,
according to the Interna-
tional Council of Jews
from Czechoslovakia.
The ICJC says an in-
creasing number of vol-
umes dealing with the
Nazi occupation and the
time before the Com-
munist takeover of
Czechoslovakia in 1948
are being made available
to book dealers in West-
ern Europe.

New York Youth Set Hanuka Relay
NEW YORK — A
Hanuka Torch Relay in-
volving the participation
of thousands of met-
ropolitan New York area
youth will take place Dec.
16 under the sponsorship
of the American Zionist
Youth Foundation and
Masada, the youth
movement of the Zionist
Organization of America.
The Torch Relay will be
an extension of a similar
relay held in Israel corn-
, memorating the Hanuka
holiday in which a flame
from Modiin, birthplace
of the Maccabees, is car-
ried by Israel youth to
every village and town in
that country.
In recent years, the
flame has been trans-
ported beyond Israel's
borders, and on Dec. 16,
the first night of Hanuka,
it will be brought to New
York by Tal Brody, the
American-born Israel
basketball star.
Participating organi-
zations are: Masada, Be-
tar, Bnei Akiva, Dror,
Habonim, Hashomer
Y our
Hatzair and
Judea.
