Dr. Shulman's Medical School
Memories Better Left Untold
Professional school ex-
periences, if written
down, would probably fill
some of the largest lib-
raries in the world. How-
ever, if they resemble Dr.
Neil Shulman's "Finally
I'm a Doctor," they'll
never make it into print.
In his novel, published
by Charles Scribner's
Sons, Dr. Shulman recalls
through his lead charac- -
ter, Lloyd Goldman, the
frustration, the fierce
competition, the prohibi-
tive tuition fees and lonel-
iness encountered by
medical school students.
Overzealous Grand-
mother Schlessel intro-
duces her still-
undergraduate grand-
son, struggling to pass a
biology course, as "Dr."
At the same time,
Goldman must contend
with the typical-
Jewish - mother - who -
wants - her - daughter - to
- marry - a - doctor Mrs.
Seltzer, who fawns over
him so that he will marry
her daughter Cheryl, for
whom Goldman has al-
ready discovered he has
X-rated ideas.
Although the book can
be read in one sitting, the
lack of creativity and the
mediocrity of the tale
makes for boredom. For
example, in recalling stu-
dent pranks in the dissect-
ing sessions, Dr. Shulman
repeats the antics that
medical students have
been perpetrating for
years.
Through Goldman, Dr.
Shulman makes a great
effort to convey to his
reader the pressure and
sweat that accompany
the medical student's life,
yet that never has an im-
pact on the reader.
Perhaps it was lost
among Goldman's pru-
rient thoughts of Cheryl.
Current and former
medical school students
probably would enjoy Dr.
Shulman's "Finally ...
I'm a Doctor," but a lei-
sure reader's time can be
better spent.
