BY BEN GALLOB

An effort to combat the
"alarming rise" in the
Jewish divorce rate is the
goal of a pilot
community-wide pre-
marital counseling pro-
gram to be started in
November in several New
York City synagogues by
the -Federation of Jewish
Philanthropies.
The task force on mar-
riage and divorce of the
Federation's commission
on synagogue relations,
in cooperation with vari-
ous family agencies of the
Federation, will encour-
age and assist establish-
ment of classes in such
counseling in synagogues
by a social worker in
cooperation with the
rabbi, Federation offi-
cials said.
Rabbi Jeshaia Schnitzer
of Montclair, N.J., a
member of the task force,
told the workshop that
the rabbi, in his capacity
as teacher and friend, is
in a good position to em-
phasize the importance of
such education. He added
that while the average
pre-marital interview is
rarely adequate, it can
serve as the basis for a
more intense program.
The task force has also
published a guide for rab-
bis on pre-marital counsel-
ing, edited by Rabbi David
M. Feldman.
Federation officials
said the initial target of
the program is to set up a
minimum of four pre-
marital counseling pro-
grams on a regional basis.
The tentative plan is
for programs each to con-.
sist of five or six semi-
nars, with no more than a
dozen persons enrolled in
