during World War II, and
is alleged to have led a
pogrom in Bucharest in
1941.
The government claims
these facts were hidden
when Trifa applied for
U.S. citizenship.
Michael Gladstone, as-
sistant federal attorney
in charge of the case, said
Trifa's deposition has
been postponed until at
least mid-October. He
was originally scheduled
to give a deposition in
June, and then Sep-
tember.
Meanwhile, the October
issue of Esquire magazine
carried a lengthy story on
the Trifa case, entitled
'The Hunt for an Ameri-
can Nazi." Author Howard
Blum wrote, "There are
other Guardist nests in
South America, with which
.Trifa communicates
through Stelian Stanicel,
once secretary general for
the Bucharest - police de-
partment, convicted in
1941 by the Romanian
government for Guardist
activity.
"Stanicel is now a Un-
ited States citizen, work-
ing in a travel agency and
living in Detroit."
