Rabbi Defines Reasoning for Prohibition

BY RABBI SAMUEL FOX

(Copyright 1976, JTA, Inc.)

A Jew is forbidden to la-
bor on the Sabbath.
The prohibition is of bibli-
cal origin since the Bible
expressly prohibits work on
the Sabbath (Exodus 20:9).
A variety of reasons are of-
fered by rabbinic sources.
One of these claims that
the Sabbath prohibition
from labor was meant to
remind man that the world
is the creation of the Al-
mighty. The Bible actually
states that the Sabbath is
thus observed because the
Almighty created the world
in six days and rested on the
seventh.
On the one hand, man is
asked to follow the exam-
ple of his creator, i.e., by
doing and creating during
the week and resting on
the Sabbath. On the other
hand, man is asked to real-
ize that he, too, is a crea-
tion of the Almighty and
not an absolute creator
himself. He therefore can-
not gain mastery over the
Almighty upon whom al-
ways he has to depend.
Some indicate that the
Sabbath is a reminder of the
Exodus from Egypt. The
Bible infers this also. In this

Rabbi Eliezer as explain-

to the juice of fruits and
that "honey" refers to the

Israel is referred to as
the land of "milk and
honey."
This description is
often referred to in the
Bible (Exodus 13:5).
There are various in-
terpretations of this de-
scription in the talmudic
literature.

Jew demonstrates his co-
venant tie with the Al-
mighty, i.e., not working on
the Sabbath was part of the
mutual agreement.
It is also claimed that
the Sabbath is a sample of
the world as it will be in
the days of the Messiah,
when, according to some,
man's emphasis on physi-
cal labor will cease and he
will be transformed into a
highly spiritual being
leading a spiritual exist-
ence all the time.
.Others look for a social
motive, i.e., indicating that
man refrains from work on
the Sabbath so that he. can
fully enjoy the company of
his family and friends for
which he has only limited
time during the week.

By RABBI SAMUEL FOX

There are some modern
analysts who contend
that both milk and honey
are characteristic of ag-
ricultural benefits and
that an abundance of.
milk is characteristic of
good land for grazing for
the animals who produce
the milk.

respect, the Sabbath is an
opportunity for man to
achieve freedom from the
pressures of the everyday
working world and rise to
spiritual heights. The Sab-
bath is the day for the full
expression and freedom of
the soul which is often sup-
pressed diaring the week
because of the bodily activi-
ties that provide the basis
for man's physical suste-
nance.
The Sabbath has also
been regarded as a sign of
the convenant between the
Jew and the Almighty. By
observing the Sabbath, the

Rabbi Akiba is quoted as
explaining that the refer-
ence to milk is actual milk
and the honey refers to
bees' honey.
