Larsen Volume Presents a Panoramic History of Israel

By ALLEN A. WARSEN

Elaine Larsen, author
of "Israel" (Hastings
House Publishers), com-
mences her narrative
with a brief historic re-
sume of the Holy Land
starting with Joshua's
conquest of Canaan and
concluding with the crea-
tion of the state of Israel.
The author compares
modern Israel to a living
mosaic composed of
people from 102 different
countries and cultures
-ho are being blended
:. adually into one people
and one culture.
Profound is the au-
thor's account of
Jerusalem. She first
summarizes the city's
millennia-old history
which extends from the
days of the Jebusites and

Clearan

King David to 19C7 CE
when the Old and
New Cities of Jerusalem
re-united to form the city
of Jerusalem, the capital
of Israel.
Prior to re-unification,
the Old City was for j 9
years under Jordanian
rule. During those years
many historic sites were
destroyed, all Jewish
houses of prayer were torn
down and the ancient
cemetery on Mount of
Olives, one of the holiest
Jewish shrines, was de-
secrated.
Illuminating is the au-
thor's description of pic-
turesque and history-rich
Galilee which extends
from Mount Hermon,
whose melting snows feed
the Jordan River, on the
north, to the Jezreel

NEW YEAR

Valley, Israel's granary,
on the south.
At the foot of Mount
Hermon is located the bi-
blical town of Dan and
nearby is Kiryat Shmona,
made famous by eight
young men and women,
led by Joseph Trumpel-
dor, who died heroically
defending Tel Hai
against Arab marauders.
(More recently many
children were murdered
at Kiryat Shmona by
Arab terrorists.)
Farther south is Safed.
In the past it served as a
center of mysticism, and
at present it is a thriving
artists' colony.
South of Safed, on the
western shore of Lake
Kinneret lies Tiberias
where, according to tradi-
tion, Rabbi Akiba and
Maimonides are buried.
Galilee, it should be
noted, is famous for its
Christian shrines.
Nazareth is the place of
the Annunciation (an-
nouncing) of the birth of
Jesus. Tabor is the site of
Jesus' Transfiguration
(change in Jesus' appear-
ance). The Mount of
Beatitudes is the location
Jesus chose the apostles.
At the foot of Mount of
Beatitudes is the tomb of
Jethro, the father-in-law
of Moses, whom the
Druze revere as a
prophet.
Interesting is the au-
thor's portrayal of the
Negev with its landscape
of ever-changing colors,
imperceptible roads cros-
sed by man for more than
35 centuries, and
Beersheba, whose history
goes back to the days of
the Patriarch Abraham
and Abimelekh, the King
of Gerar.

Included, among others,
in the Negev's panorama
are Sodom, the Masada,
the Dead Sea, Etzion
Geber, Sde Boker, and the
more than 20,000 Bedouin
whose mode of life has un-
dergone in recent years
immense changes.
Finally, at the very
southern end, where King
Solomon welcomed the
Queen of Sheba, the
Negev's "Venice of the
Red Sea," Eilat is located.

Kosher Meat Prices
Rise at Holidays

NEW YORK (JTA)—
New York City Jews
planning to buy kosher
meats for the High Holy
Day period may be paying
nearly double the price of
non-kosher cuts and
those choosing glatt
kosher meats will be pay-
ing much more than dou-
ble the price of non-
kosher meats, according
to an estimate by the
Metropolitan New York
Coordinating Council on
Jewish Poverty. The
Council reported on find-
ings in neighborhood
surveys of fluctuating
prices of kosher and glatt
kosher meats during the
week of Sept. 2.
The Council cited as an
example of its findings a
range in price for kosher
chicken from a high of one
dollar a pound in the
Washington Heights-
Inwood section of Man-
hattan to a low of 84 cents
in the West Bronx, while
prices quoted by glatt
kosher butchers for
kosher chicken ranged
from a high of $1.22 per
pound in the West Bronx
to. a low of 89 cents per
pound in Queens.
The Council said that,
overall, chickens sold by
glatt kosher butchers was
16 percent higher than
that from kosher butcher
shops.
