enough times, you're
bound to see people you
haven't seen in umteen
years . . . It's getting to
be a showplace of the
northwest much like
Darbys had become.
But this isn't the main
forte at Irving's . . . A
good substantial menu -
always seems to have
food that most everybody
likes . . . Very few places
can compare with Rose
Guttman's specialty dis-
hes which, of course, in-
clude her gefilte fish,
pickled trout and boiled
white fish . . . A recent
dinner visit at Irving's
had our mouth watering
for one of Rose's excellent
stuffed green peppers
. . . When it comes to a
delicacy like this, there is
no in-between . . . it's
either good or bad . .
and at Irving's, the stuf-
fed green peppers are ex-
cellent . . . juicy, very
well prepared . . . and
tastefully fresh . . . The
hamburger meat is
among the best to be got-
ten anywhere.
From Rose and Irving
Guttman and sons Jerry
and Seymour . . . Lil
Benkoff, cashier; Paula
Spinner and Ruth Klein-
man, hostesses . . . plus
waitresses Colleen Rein-
boldt, Margo Neidich, Jan
Grissom, Beverly Gray
and Alma Hill among
others, the service and in-
timate congeniality is dif-
ficult to compare.
Good wholesome food,
fine service and a
haimishe atmosphere
gives Irving's its very
wide and most deserved
popularity as a totally
complete real
delicatessen-restaurant.
LEONARD ROSENT-
HAL has the right idea
. . . "If I go into a re-
staurant or night club
and something isn't right,
I'd rather tell the owner
about it and come back
again instead of not say-
ing anything and never
going back."
MARIO'S ON Second,
opened its doors in 1948
. . . with Mario Lelli
emigrating to the United
States from Bologna in
1930 . . . With brother

JACK GOLDBERG at
Stage Delicatessen in
Oak Park is a gourmet
chef in his own right . . .
likes to cook . . . loves
broiled white fish cold
. . . and recently put gas-
pacho soup on his menu

tomers complained about
the soup being cold!)

of area's best entertain-
ers.
THE BEST SHERRY
comes from Spain, where
for centuries the vintners
near Jerez made their
wine by means of a un-
ique blending method
known as the solera sys-
tem . . . Basically, this is
a method of mixing older
mellowed sherry with
newer wine . . . Califor-
nia sherry, an imitation
of the Spanish product, is
not made by the solera
system, although some
California vintners have
long experimented with
Spanish methods, with
good results . . . Sherry
can be bone dry or very
sweet . . . These words on
the labels of Spanish
sherry tell you what you
are getting . . . Man-
zanilla, extremely dry;
Fino, also extremely dry;
Amontillado, dryish and
nutty; Amoroso, medium
dry and Oloroso, sweet.
IN MANY INSTANCES,
don't blame the estab-
lishment for your deliv-
ery order of ribs, pizza,
chicken, etc. if it comes
soggy or cold . . . The de-
livery kids taking their
time have a lot to do with
it . . However, there are
places that give their
boys too many orders to
deliver . . . This way, it's
virtually impossible for
