first she pointed to the
fallibility of man, in the
second she suggests that
man is really a fool. -
Stanislav Lushinski is
the "hero - of "A Merce-
nary." He is Polish, a dip-
lomat-, but is the repre-
sentative Paid
Mouthpiece — for a small
African, nation he once
visited. Although
Lushinski came from a
more civilized society in
Europe than Morris, his

a primitive African tribe
and was educated in Ox-
ford, Lushinski is the less
civilized of the two.
According to Ms. Ozick,
"Morris was a Victorian.
lie_was a gentleman. He
believed in civilizing in-
fluences; even more in
civility. He was besotted
by style. If he thought of
knives, it was for butter-
ing scones."
The key to the main
character is found in
Lushinski's purchase of a
uniform:
"In a place called
Oneonta, N.Y., Lushinski
told about the uniform: in
Paris he had gone to a
tailor and asked him to
make up the 'costume of
an officer: 'Of which na-
tionality, sir?"0h, no
particular one.' 'What
rank, sir?' 'High. As high
as you can imagine.' The
coat was long, had
epaulets, several golden
bands on the sleeves, and
metal buttons engraved
with the head of a dead
monarch — From a toy
store Lushinski bought
'ribbons and medals to
hang on its breast."
In "An Education" the
author describes Una
Meyer, a brilliant student,
but empty individual, who
suddenly .smitten..by the
perfect" life she per-
ceives is being led by a
glamorous young couple at
Yale, abandons her Ful-
bright scholarship for un-
paid service in their home
