A combination of
statements by Leonard
Garment, Norman
Podhoretz and Henry
Waxman has helped to
put into perspective be-
fore Congress and
elsewhere the "code
word" that has come to be
applied to describe Is-
rael's position over law
and land in the Middle
East. That "code word - is
"intransigence."

penetratingly critical of

Intransigence'
word
whenever Israel refuses to
surrender slices of its
safety. -
Waxman, a freshman
Democratic Congress-
man from Los An-
geles, presented these
views to the Congress and
added some of his own. In
the House of Representa-
tives (July 27), he
stressed that "it has be-
come distressingly fash-
ionable for critics and
analysts of the Middle
East to paint Israel as the
intransigent party in the
area — that if only Israel
would withdraw to the
1967 — 1948? — borders,
that if only Israel would
unconditionally turn
over the West Bank and
the Gaza Strip to the
Palestinians, that if only
Israel would pay repara-
tions to the refugees of
the 1948 War of Indepen-
dence, peace would come
to the Middle East for all
peoples.
"It is a convenient and
illusory argument,"
Waxman added. "It is one
which seeks to ration-
alize the exploitative
power shift which has
graced the Arab oil
producing states, and
their Soviet arms back-
ers, since the Yom Kip-
pur War. It is one which
closes the eyes to the hor-
ror of terrorism, and
which washes its hands of
the hemorrhage that is
Lebanon today. It is, fi-
nally, an argument which
remains blind to the basic
obstacle to peace between
Israel and its neighbors:-
the refusal of the Arab
states and the Palesti-
nians to accept Israel's
existence within secure
and recognized borders."

Entebbe Airport Hostage's Son
Can Identify Mother's Killers

LONDON (JTA) — A son
of Mrs. Dora Bloch said that
he knew the names of four
members of the Ugandan
secret police who had
murdered his mother and
would be willing to testify
to a commission of inquiry
in Uganda if President Idi
Amin set one up. He did not
believe, however, that the
killers had been acting on
orders from Amin.
Bertram Bloch said that
the family had received this
information in the past
three weeks. The Israeli
engineer was addressing
journalists at the end of his
stay in Britain during which
he has been investigating
his mother's death in the
wake of the Israeli rescue
action at Entebbe Airport.
He also thought that no
more witnesses of the
murder were still alive in
Uganda. However, he
appealed to other witnesses,
who had since left the coun-
try, to come forward to con-
firm what he had already
been told.
Mr. Bloch, who held
dual British and Israeli
citizenship, was a
passenger on the Air
France plane hijacked by
pro-Palestinian terrorists
to Uganda. She was
reportedly taken to a
hospital in Kampala

before the Israeli rescue
operation. On July 13 a
newspaper in Nairobi,
Kenya, reported that the
partly burned body of Mrs.
Bloch was found in a
forest 11 miles from Kam-
pala, Uganda's capital.

Bloch's press conference
was held at the House of
Commons under the
auspices of Labor MP
Greville Janner, who has
formed a group of MPs to
keep a watch on the case.
Bloch thanked Janner, his
colleagues and the British
government for their con-
cern at the affair.
