I
The Best of Everything
(Continued from Page 24)
Khayyam . . . under new
ownership . . . and serving
its regular good food plus
Lebanese dishes which
eventually will be its main
feature.
NO, THE SIGN hasn't
been reversed at recently
opened Nicky Poo's Two To
Two restaurant on
Southfield, just south of 10
Mile . . . You're reading
correctly with open 2 a.m. to
2 p.m. . . . It's the former
Purple Pickle, etc. site, ser-
ving breakfast and lunch
. . . with some dinners . . .
plus the usual very good
home-made chili and soups
. . . There's entertainment
from 2 a.m. to 5:30 a.m. . . .
in the small 48-seater . . .
Former musician and
songster Nick Harris is
manager of the long hours
suet-up . . . an after-two
spot without booze . . . and
he has an excellent day
manager in smiling, boun-
cing eager-to-please Eileen
Ryan.
SOL PITT, new bossman
at Alban's Bottle & Basket
on N. Hunter (Woodward)
in Birmingham, is a
delicatessen man from way
back who knows what it's
all about in the restaurant
field . . . Who can forget his
and Harry Shepherd's
Shep's Delicatessen on
Griswold and State St. in
the 50's? . . . We can't . . .
Sol's former spot at the Tel-
12 Mall is now owned by the
coney islanders across the
hall, and run by George
Fink.
THERE IS ONLY one
owner now of Monk's Cellar
on 12 Mile and Orchard
Lake . . . Jim Capenkas.
ERRATA . . . Sorry for
the boo boo . . . Correct
name is Feldbros Quality
Meats on W. Seven Mile . .
regarding new Dilmahal
restaruant buying their
meats there . . . and it does
not sell kosher meat.
FIG TREE on Woodward
just west of Square Lake
Rd., is the former Konee's
restaurant . . . Too many
people associated the name
with the coney island opera-
tion . . . It is 'a family
restaurant with a wide
variety of reasonably priced
dishes for breakfast, lunch
and dinner . . . The Greek
salad is outstanding.
CUSTOM TAYLOR'D
gives out with listening and
dancing entertainment
through Aug. 28 at the
Playboy Club's Living Room
on James Couzens and
Greenfield.
BONFIRE RESTAU-
RANT on W. Eight Mile
west of Evergreen, may
change its name . . . With
Chef Doug Derello doing his
very fine cooking chores,
more items have been added
to the menu for more of a
family-type set up now . . .
The $4.50 dinner specials for
New York steak, prime rib
and bar-b-q ribs are still on
Monday through Saturday.
WHY NOT A REUN-
ION among the deli
men with at least 30 years
behind them? . . . What
stories they could weave!
. . . Like Sol Shpargel
telling of the fellow who
bought a pound of corned
beef years ago at a local deli
where Sol worked, put it on
the seat next to him until
his sandwich came . . .
After putting in much of the
corned beef, he called over
the boss and said, "Boy!
Look at this — you sure
make a terrific sandwich
here!" . . . Sol says his boss
almost had a fit and rushed
to the counter ready to fire
whoever made the
sandwich.
ON
DIMITRI'S
WOODWARD between 12
and 13 Mile may be
changing its name to either
Dimitri's Nikos or Niko's
Dimitri's . . . Owner and
chef Nick started out as a
dishwasher for Sero's on
Griswold in 1951 . . . and
blossomed into a leading
chef . . . From 1953 to 1958,
Nick owned a bar-b-q spot
. . . and then went to
Greece . . . When he
returned, Nick became the
night chef at Little Harry's
on. Jefferson during its hey
day . . . Because of his
cooking ability, he has been
able to come up with a menu
that includes family
delights at reasonable
prices.
With the waistline
carefuls sort of taking over
so many restaurants, the
experience of Nick has
enabled to keep up . . . The
lo-cal creamy garlic
dressing he makes from
buttermilk has an excellent
taste . . . We don't have to
watch our diet, but the
dressing is better than most
regular ones.
Also, smiling, pleasant
waitress Cleo Raptoplous
brought us a yum yum legal
Weight Watchers parfait
with ice cream Nick makes
himself . . . topped with
fresh blueberries and
pineapple . . . When
strawberries are in you can
have them, too . . . The lo-
cal creamy garlic dressing,
by the way, can be eaten in
or taken out.
IF OWNER OF Maple
House on Southfield and 10
Mile wants to know why
this spot doesn't do as well
as the others, this could be
one of the reasons . . . We
went there one morning last
week, ordered pecan pan-
cakes . . . Five of them
came in the small order for
$2 . . . that's 40 cents apiece
. . . The butter was not
melted and the chopped
pecans were sprinkled only
in the center . . . along with
a few very-hard-to-chew
pieces of shell.
DID YOU EVER notice
that no' two Italian
restaurants have the same
minestrone soup? . . . It is
different in every place you
go.
No Difference
"Before me," said the
Lord, "there is no differ-
ence between Jew and
Gentile; he that ac-
complishes good, will I
reward accordingly."
