Our Brothers.
Our brothers, all the House
of Israel,
sunk in sorrow and captiv-
ity,
be it on land or be it on sea,
may the Omnipresent show
them mercy,
and may he draw them
forth
from narrow sorrow into
ease,
and from darkness into
light,
and from slavery to redemp-
tion,
now, speedily
and shortly.
And let us say, Amen.

Confession of sins is an
act that isreferred to al-
ready in the Bible. There, it
is something that a Jew is
obligated to do in order to
indicate his repentance for
sin (Lev. 5:15, Numbers 5:6).
The confessions in those
days were associated with
sacrifices which were of-
fered as an atonement for
sin. As Maimonides put it,
now that we have no Temple
and do not observe the prac-
tice of offering sacrifices,
we still have the practice of
confession.
Maimonides claims that
an offense against the Al-
mighty should be confessed
in private while a sin
against a fellow man should
be confessed in public. A
Third Century scholar in
the Talmud explained that a
sinner who confesses his sin
and repents changes the
character of his sin from
intentional wrong-doing to
unintentional transgres-
sion.
Another statement in
the Talmud states that in
some cases confessing a
sin converts it from an act
of evil to a deed of virtue.
The difference between the
two results depends upon
whether the confession
was made out of fear or out
of love to the Almighty.
One of the Hasidic .schol-
ars claims that by confes-
sion a person breaks the
hold of the evil intent and
inclination so that he can
proceed in life with a clear
conscience and a free will.
The Talmud calls for confes-
sion on the part of a sick
person who is near death.
Confessions are also of-
fered on Yom Kippur — the
Day of Atonement — and
by bride and groom before
the wedding ceremony takes
place. Short confessions are
part of the daily prayer
services. The„ forgiving
agent, of course, is the Al-
mighty Himself who has
taught man the art of con-
fession so that he can face
the reality of life without
any mental complications.

The thousands of lan-
guages - the world over with
their hundreds of millions
of words have only one word
in common. It. happens to be
the Hebrew word "Amen."
NOW 20%,050% OF,
It is first found in the
translation of the Hebrew
Bible into Greek in 250
BCE. Scholars at first
translated "Amen" with a
full sentence in Greek: "May
this prayer come true."
Later they simply decided
to make a present of the He-
brew word "Amen" to the
Greek language. This began
a tradition then throughout
the centuries: 'every single
language into which the Bi-
ble has been translated has
adopted the Hebrew word
"Amen."
It is now the most widely
used word in all human
speech.
