Akiva Student's Poem Included in Yeshiva Children's Book
A fifth grade student in
Akiva Day School is repre-
sented in an unusual collec-
tion of poems selected in a
contest conducted nation-
ally in American Jewish
Day Schools.
Susan Lerner's "The
Story of Yosef" thus became
part of "Yeshiva Children
Write Poetry: From the
Heart We Sing" (Hebrew
Publishing Co.).
Her poem follows:
Yaakov made Yosef a coat of
many colors.
How angry it made his eleven
jealous brothers.
They managed to trick him to
become a slave,
And the coat of many colors,
with blood, to their father
they gave.
To Yaakov they said, "See Yos-
ef's bloody coat;
He was killed by a wild animal
who leaped to his throat".
Yaakov believed them;
He wept and he sighed:
He never suspected his sons had
lied.
Many years later Yaakov heard
tell
That his son Yosef was alive and
well.

Before the advent of the
Arab conquerors,-- Jews had
lived in large numbers in
most of the countries that
are now Arab states. There
were Jews in Iraq, in Baby-
lonia, 1,000 years earlier
than that Arab conquest. In
Libya there was a flourish-
ing Jewish community 600
years before the Arabs ap-
peared on the scene. In the
Middle Ages and in more re-
cent days, the Jews in those
Arab lands who had to seek
eventual sanctuary in Israel
from the bigotry of ungrate-
ful Arab governments, had
been instrumental, by their
talents and their commer-
cial links, in bringing prog-
ress and wealth, affluence
and culture, to those same
countries.
He could hardly believe that
Pharoah's Viceroy
Was his Yosef, his beloved boy.
Co-sponsored by Torah
Umesora, the National So-
ciety for Hebrew Day
Schools, the National Con-
ference of Hebrew Princi-
pals and the Jewish Mu-
seum of Art and Culture,
the selections note a special
concern given in the prefer-
ences -for winners of roles in
this volume.
- The pride shown in pro-
ducing this work is shown in
the series of preliminary
statements that precede the
poems and art work, in the
foreword, preface, editor's
note and introduction. In
addition to the editor of the
poetic collection, Manfred
Hans, the brief statements
are by the heads of the spon-
soring movements, Dr. Jo-
seph Kaminetsky, director
of Torah Umesorah; Rabbi
Chaim Medetsky, head of
the Yeshiva principals asso-
ciation and Solomon Simon-
son, head of the American
Jewish Museum of Art and
Culture.
A highlight of this book
are the illustrations by the
very young poets. The line
drawings, the emphases on
holiday themes and the use
of specific Jewish syn-
agogue and other objects
point to the specifics that
concerned the youths whose
works were chosen for in-
clusion in this hook. The re-
sort by some to Hebrew se-
lections also are indicative
of the learning of the young-
sters.
