Pursuit of Knowledge Paid Off
for Refugee
He Earned PhD
Morris Loren, who at age
81 will receive his PhD de-
gree in philosophy of higher
education at Wayne State
University Tuesday never
stopped his pursuit of
knowledge.
According to the Detroit
News, Loren arrived in the
U.S. with is family in 1923
during the aftermath of the
Bolshevik revolution. The
family fled a Ukrainian vil-
lage of Jews who were expe-
riencing Russian persecu-
tion.
Upon his arrival he
spoke little English, but
went to night school to in-
crease his knowledge of
the language. He received
a bachelor's degree in
business administration in
1920, married and worked
in the laundry business
and went back to college
where he earned a mas-
ter's degree in 1969. He
