with rave reviews and large
audiences. at the three world
premiere performances of
Detroiter Esther Broner's
"The Body Parts of Mar-
garet Fuller" at Wayne
State University's Hilberry
Theatre last weekend.
The 11-actress cast put on
sparkling performances of
the play, which won WSU's
American Bicentennial
Playwriting Competition
for Mrs. Broner, writer-in-
residence and associate
professor of English at
WSU.
The play takes place on an
Israeli kibutz, but the Jew-
ish nuances are subordinate
to the major theme of wom-
en's experience, brought out
through the class's study of
the life of mid-19th Century
writer, editor and feminist
Margaret Fuller.
The 10 students and
their "convenor," immi-
grants from throughout
the world, tell the story of
Margaret Fuller and ulti-
mately their own stories as
women, through personal
experiences.
Remarkably, none of the
11 actresses play subordi-
nate roles and all gave
strong individual perform-
ances that contributed to
the theme. The cast in-
cluded Devorah Eizikovic as
a lesbian, Deborah Adler as
a Russian woman, and Sa-
bina Gurewicz as a Roman-
ian.
Each character looks to
her own experiences with
her father, with men, in es-
caping from political op-
pression or family oppres-
sion in coming to Israel, and
relate society's oppressions
while comparing their own
lives to that of Margaret
Fuller.
Each actress is intensely
involved in the highly emo-
tional plot, and their hopes,
fears, dreams and realities
come crashing and resound-
ing around themselves and
rebounding through the
class in Esther Broner's
commentary on women and
society.
