Austria May Buy Israel-Made
Kfir Aircraft, Kreisky Confirms

VIENNA (JTA) — Chan-
cellor Bruno Kreisky con-
firmed that Austria was
considering the purchase of
the Israel-made jet intercep-
tor "Kfir" as part of a pro-
gram to modernize its obso-
let air force.
The "Kfir" is the first
combat plane designed and
manufactured in Israel. It
was planned after the Six-
Day War to replace Mirage
jets cut off by the French
embargo and is produced by
Israel Aircraft Industries.

Reports that Austria
may buy the plane ap-
peared this week in Kor-
nen Zeitung. According to
the paper, a three-man
Austrian delegation would
visit Israel shortly to in-
spect the Kfir. Israel Air-
craft Industries, mean-
while, refused to comment
on reports that the Israeli
government has offered to
sell Austria 20 of the jets
on very favorable terms.

contended that the report
was leaked by unfriendly
elements in order to invite
Arab pressure against the
deal.
Kreisky reportedly told a
delegation of Israeli indus-
trialists in Vienna that
quality, price and suitabil-
ity alone would determine
the fate of the transaction.
He stressed that Austria
would not bow to political
pressures.

Czechs to Build
Oil Unit for Iraq

GENEVA — A $24 mil-
lion contract was signed in
March between Czechoslo-
vakia and Iraq for supply of
a distillery unit in comple-
tion of the oil refinery at
Basra, built by Czech techn-
icians.
The new unit is to have an
annual capacity of 3.5 mil-
lion tons and is being built
on the assumption that the
present capacity of the refi-
nery will double within two
years.

Wages and Prices
Climbing in Israel

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Wages are rising in Israel
but not quite fast enough to
keep pace with rising food
prices, according to figures
released by the Central Bu-
reau of Statistics.
Average wages rose 36
percent last year while
prices increased by 39 per-
cent in the same period, ac-
cording to the bureau. Aver-
age increase in agricultural
wages was 49 percent last
year and in industry, 44 per-
cent. But in the services sec-
tor, the average wage rise
was only 28 percent, the
bureau reported.

Circles close to the firm

PHILADELPHIA (JTA)
— Bnai Brith will ask the
Democratic and Republican
parties to give "forthright
and unambiguous" support
in their 1976 Presidential
platforms to federal legisla-
tion that would make it ille-
gal for American firms to
comply with the Arab boy-
cott against Israel, the Bnai
Brith's administrative com-
mittee announced at its
semi-annual meeting.
The action was one of a
series of proposals on for-
eign and domestic issues in
which Bnai Brith will seek
bi-partisan support during
this election year.
David M. Blumberg, pres-
ident of Bnai Brith, said
that "a strong and enforcea-
ble" anti-boycott law is
needed "to put a damper on
Arab economic warfare
which has coerced Ameri-
can corporations and banks
into flouting U.S. policies
and interests."
Blumberg added that the
"foreign policy plans by ei-
ther party which call for
Middle East peace measures
but ignore•the Arab boy-
cott's subversion of Ameri-
can national interests would
be self-weakening and open
to challenge."
