Bond Dinner at Shaarey Zedek
Monday to Honor the Jackiers

Israel's Ambassador-at-
Large, Max Varon, will be
guest speaker at the Annual
Cong. Shaarey Zedek-Israel
Bond Tribute Dinner to be
held Monday evening at
Shaarey Zedek.

MAX VARON

Varon, distinguished dip-
lomat and adviser on Jewish
communities for Israel's
Foreign Ministry, occupies a
post that was created this
year to cover relations with
Jewish communities in
countries of the free world
as well as those behind the
Iron Curtain.
Varon emigrated to Pales-
tine in 1939 from Nazi Ger-
many. He attended Hebrew
University in Jerusalem,
then joined the Jewish Bri-
gade, part of the British
Eighth Army, and fought
against the German armies
in the Middle East and Eu-
rope.
Honored at this year's
dinner will be Joseph H.
Jackier, who has a long
record of service to his
congregation and the com-
munity. Jackier will be
presented with the Jerusa-
lem City of Peace Award
on behalf of the State of Is-
rael Bond organization.

announced at the recent leadership reception at the
Southfield home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Field in ad-
vance of Monday's annual State of Israel Bond Dinner
at Cong. Shaarey Zedek. Shown at the leadership recep-

Bishop Valerian Trifa to Give
Deposition in U.S. Court Case

Bishop Valerian (Viorel)
Trifa, archbishop of the
Romanian Orthodox Church
in the United States and
accused of lying during im-
migration proceedings
about his World War II ac-
tivities and of directing a po-
grom in Bucharest, will give
his deposition in the U.S.
government's immigration
case against him June 7.
The U.S. Attorney's Of-
fice in Detroit said that fol-
lowing Trifa's deposition,
which may take two days, a
trial date will probably be
set.

Campaign Catch-Up Telethon
Seeks Unsolicited Contributors

Workers for the Allied
Jewish Campaign-Israel
Emergency Fund have
scheduled two evening tele-
thons for 7-9 p.m. Monday
and Tuesday in the main
United Hebrew Schools
building to make calls to
those contributors who were
not reached during the for-
mal phases of the Cam-
paign, announced 1976 gen-
eral chairmen Dr. Leon Fill
and Merle Harris.
The Campaign had its of-
ficial closing meeting on
April 28.
The special effort, accord-
ing to Dr. Fill, is part of De-
troit's plan regarding the
national United Jewish Ap-
peal Campaign to cover ev-
ery pledge by June 6, which
has been chosen as the
American Jewish Commu-
nity's first national closing
date.
The national effort in-
cludes an intensive cash
collection drive to aid cash
