Longtime Newsman
NEW YORK — Lou
Shainmark, a former offi-
cial with the Hearst news-
papers, died Monday at age
75.
Born Eliezer Shainmark
in Warsaw, he was night ed-
itor and feature editor on
The New York. Graphic
from 1925 to 1929. He was
instrumental in the publica-
tion of private letters of Ni-
cola Sacco and Bartolomeo
Vanzetti, whose execution
in 1927 for the murders of a
paymaster and guard of a
South Braintree, Mass.,
shoe factory caused a storm
of protest by many people,
who insisted the men had
been convicted for their an-
archist beliefs rather than
the crime for which they
had been charged.
As night managing editor
of The New York Evening?
Journal in 1934, Mr. Shain-
mark suggested comparing
samples of Bruno Richard
Hauptmann's writing with
the ranson notes in the kid-
napping of the two-year-old
son of Charles A. Lindberg.
This gave The Journal a
scoop and resulted in the
first hard evidence that
helped shatter Haupt-
mann's plea of innocence.
After serving as assistant
managing editor of The
_Chicago — American from
1936 to 1945, Mr. Shain-
mark was managing editor
and White House corre-
spondent of the Hearst
Washington Bureau in 1947
and managing editor of The
Chicago Herald-American.
