Sao Paulo.
Sobel explained that in
South-America the distinc-
tion is between Orthodox
and non-Orthodox, and al-
though he was ordained as a
Reform rabbi, he serves a
congregation that is closer
to Conservative practices as
it is known in the U.S.
Sobel said that for the
Brazilian Jewish commu-
nity to survive, it needs help
from Israel and world Je-
wry in the form of rabbis
and Jewish professionals.
He said they would find the
opportunity for a rich ca-
reer in Brazil.

TEL AVIV — In a letter
to the Jerusalem Post, N.E.
Dangoor of London wrote:

tralia," he added.
Fraser's strong declara-
tion of support for Israel,
which follows similar com-
mitments made during the
recent election campaign
here, has encouraged Jew-
ish communal leaders. But
they are waiting to see
how the Fraser govern-
ment will react when it
will have to make deci-
sions on more specific is-
sues, such as allowing
PLO representatives to
come to Australia.
While the Dec. 13 land-
slide win for Fraser's Liber-
al-National Party coalition
is expected to produce a
more sympathetic under-
standing of Israel's position
by the new government, Is-
rael lost some of its friends
in the parliament.
The Anti-Labor swing —
the Fraser government will
have a minimum 55-seat
majority in the 127-seat
parliament — swept two
outstanding pro-Israel
spokesmen from Federal
politics.
The Minister for Enviro-
ment in the Whitlam gov-
ernment, Joe Berinson, lost
his seat as did the Minister
for Housing, Joe Riordan.

Berinson, a-leading mem-
ber of Perth's Jewish com-
munity was a brilliant and
articulate pro-Israel advo-
cate who often found him-
self in conflict with his own
prime minister. Riordan,
who is not Jewish but repre-
sented a heavily Jewish elec-
torate, was moving force
behind the parliamentary
Labor friends of Israel.
On the other hand, Aus-
tralia's most outspoken
supporter of the PLO and
an extreme left winger,
Bill Hartley, failed in an
attempt to win a place in
the Senate on the Labor
ticket for the state of Vic-
toria: A widespread cam-
paign against Hartley was
mounted within the Jew-
ish community by both
Labor and non-Labor sup-
porters. The Board of Dep-
uties took the unprecen-
dented step of calling on
all Jewish voters, regard-
less of party, to reject Har-
tley.
In the new parliament,
which will commence its
session next February,
there will be four Jewish
parliamentarians. For the

Melbourne as did Barry .

For the Liberal Party, Sena-

while his cousin, Michael
Baume, won a seat for the
first time in the House of
Representatives.

Portrait of Golda
in National Gallery

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
A painting of former Israeli
Premier Golda Meir, the
only American woman ever
to become head of a foreign
government, has been ac-
cepted by the National Por-
trait Gallery, the Smithson-
ian Institution announced.
Formal presentation took
place last Friday at the gal-
lery with Mrs. Meir attend-
ing a luncheon there in her
honor.
The 32x26-inch portrait
by Raphael Soyer is a gift to
the gallery, a part of the
Smithsonian, by Mr. and
Mrs. Cummings of New
York and Mr. and Mrs.
Meyer P. Potamkin of Phil-
adelphia. It will remain on
view on the gallery's second
floor through Jan. 4.
Russian-born, like Mrs.
Meir, Soyer painted this
portrait last year. The sit-
ting, which took place in
Connecticut, was arranged
by Martin Peretz, chairman
of the New Republic maga-
zine and a longtime friend
of Mrs. Meir

NEW YORK (JTA) — The
survival of Brazil's Jewish

The 31-year-old rabbi of

other rabbis and Jewish
