WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Fuerth, West Germany,
honored its most famous
son- Monday. U.S. Secretary
of State Henry Kissinger
was presented with a citi-
zen's gold medal for his con-
tributions to world peace in
ceremonies outside the town
haft of that northern Bavar-
ian city where -he was born
52 years ago and from
which he fled in 1938 as a
15-year-old refugee from
Nazi terror.,
The Secretary of State,
accompanied by his wife,
parents and brother, spent
six hours in Fuerth. They
were greeted by West Ger-
man Foreign Minister
Hans-Dietrich Genscher
who remarked on the signif-
icance that the U.S. en-
trusted the search for work'
peace to one "who was not
born in America."
In accepting, the award
before several hundred citi-
zens of Fuerth who packed
the tiny town square, Kis-
singer spoke in the same

from his generosity. In
• 1963 he donated a' building
to the city of Detroit to be
used for the city's training
program for Detroit's un-
employed youth.
A native Detroiter, Mr.
Shiffman served on the
boards of major communal
and civic agencies, including
the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion, Sinai Hospital, of
which he was treasurer;
United Jewish Charities,
Detroit Service Group and
the international ORT body.

vein. He said he was "proud"
to be in Fuerth as "Sec-
retary of State • of 'perhaps
the only country in the
world - where it is possible
for an adopted son to have
the opportunity for respon-
sibility and service that I
have enjoyed."
Kissinger made no di-
rect reference to the Nazi
era in his 700-word speech,
although he referred to
"the dark forces of brutal-
ity and raw power" that
his generation had wit-
nessed. Foreign Minister
Genscher observed that
the Kissingers were forced
to flee Germany at a time
when the ideals of justice,
equality and freedom had
been betrayed.
Five years before the Kis- 1.
singers left Fuerth,. hiS,

father, a school teacher, had
been dismissed' because he
was Jewish. The Jewish
population of Fuerth then
was about 3,000; today no
more than 300 Jews live
there.
The Secretary and his
famil'y spent some time
with members of the Jewish
community and looked up
old , friends. Kissinger pre-
viously_visited Fuerth as an
American soldier after
-World War-II and in 1959
when he was an instructor
at Harvard.

Conform to common cus-
tom and not to common
folly.

Since its establishment in
1951, the Shiffman Fund
has provided millions of dol-
lars to promote health, edu-
cation and welfare projects.
