Golan Druze Communicate
Over Border With Bullhorns

JERUSALEM — Wear-
ing the ancient garb of the
Arabs while talking through
a modern-day bullhorn, the
Druze of Israel and Syria
gather -weekly at border
frontier to exchange news
and greetings.
Separated by the Six-Day
"_War capture of the Golan
Heights; many of the Druze
had not seen members of
their families for seven
years until the June 1974 di-
sengagement agreement
between Syria and Israel.
Word of the accord spread
quickly among the Druze on
both sides of the frontier. At
first only a few showed up
at the barbed wire barrier,
but in recent months crowds
have been known to form.
According to Terrence
Smith in the New York
Times, Israel will not per-
_mit the–families to come
together because the Druze
of the Golan are a "highly

suspect community." Sev-
eral Druze espionage rings
have been uncovered on the.
heights since 1967, and 45
Golan Druze are serving
sentences in Israeli prisons
after being convicted by mil-
itary courts," Smith wrote.
According - to -Smith, the
Druze are a clannish, • con-
servative people, accus-
tomed to their minority
status. They number about
500,000 in the Middle East
and have their origins in
Islam. -
About 38,000 Druze live in
Israel where they are full Is-
raeli citizens, serving in the
army in their own units.
There are about 250,000 in
Syria, 100,000 in Lebanon
and smaller communities in
Europe and Latin America.

PARIS — Secretary of

Speaking to a 27-nation
